It’s not often that a ten-year-old with one win in 16 gets bought for a six-figure sum but that’s how much Blaklion has been bought for, and it's caused his odds to shorten for the Grand National.
Yorkshire-based trainer Phil Kirby now has the former Cheltenham winner in his Green Oaks stable and some bookies have cut the veteran’s odds on Grand National Glory this March to 33/1.
Blaklion has finished fourth before and punters have been inspired by his trainer change, as he is the most popular horse in the Grand National market in the last 24 hours.
He accumulated 22% of bets in this time, even more than last year’s winner and Boyne Plate specialist Tiger Roll, who romped home at Navan on Sunday.
While his price was reduced by some bookies, he remains a best price of 50/1. If this does become his SP, he would be the biggest price National winner since Auroras Encore (66/1) in 2013.
Oddschecker spokesman George Elek: “It's an eye-watering sum of money for a 10-year-old, so connections must be confident of getting some return from Blaklion in the immediate future. The Grand National is the obvious plan, so it's no shock to see a spike of interest for the Aintree race.”
