The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, the opening race of the Cheltenham Festival, is always an eagerly anticipated event in any racing fan’s calendar.
Run over 2m 87y, The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle race, open to horses aged four years or older – but which horses have won The Supreme Novices' Hurdle?
Previous winners of The Supreme Novices' Hurdle include: Klassical Dream in 2019, who kick-started trainer Willie Mullins’ festival, helping the Irishman scoop the Top Trainer award after the four days of action.
The five-year-old was piloted by Ruby Walsh – his only win of the festival.
Another notable winner of The Supreme Novices' Hurdle is Altior who, along with Nico de Boinville, romped home by seven lengths in 2016.
Altior is now a serial winner at the course, but this first Cheltenham Festival victory will always be seen as a watershed moment.
The biggest-price winner of the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle over the last decade was Labaik in 2017, who set off at a whopping 25/1, giving trainer Gordon Elliott a dream start to proceedings.
It’s also worth noting that only two favourites—Douvan in 2015 (2/1) and Vautour in 2014 (7/2)—have ended up winning The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, making it a very interesting prospect for punters.
