Daryl Carter has all the key stats and trends for the Champion Chase.
The Queen Mother Champion Chase is run on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival and is the feature race of the day. The race has seen horses come back to win year after year. Stars such as back-to-back winner Altior, and returning favourite Sprinter Sacre, are two in recent times that have won the race on more than one occasion. Nicky Henderson heads the top trainer list in recent times, winning the race a staggering five times.
Short and sweet but below I have highlighted some ten year stats and trends that any savvy punter looking to make it pay at the Cheltenham Festival in 2020 will want on their side.
In 2019 Altior looked to be in a bit of trouble jumping the final flight until his stamina kicked in and he powered away up the hill impressively to win back-to-back Champion Chases.

At a glance- 10 year trends
Age Counts:
9yo’s are 4/10 in this race. Age can vary due to previous winners returning but if you only calculate on the basis of their first win in this race you would see the figures much more evenly as follows:
9yo’s - 3, 8yo’s -2, 7yo’s - 2, 10yo - 1.
Price matters:
4/10 favourites have won, two of which were heavily odds-on. However, the average SP of the Champion Chase winner is 6/1.
Britain or Ireland?
Britain fare best in this race winning 7/10 renewals. Henry De Bromhead is responsible for two of the Irish winners but the strength in British two milers has grown over the years; winning 7 of the last 8 renewals.
Recent run:
No winner has run over further than 2m1f prior to this race, with nearly all the runners keeping to the 2m distance.
Official Rating:
The quality of this race is emphasised with the winner having an average official rating of a huge 168!
A winner last time out:
7/10 won last time out. Special Tiara (2017) Finian’s Rainbow (2012) and Sizing Europe (2011) were the horses beaten coming into the Champion Chase.
In-depth stat analysis:
Below I have highlighted a range of stat figures based on the past 10 winners of the race. Some hold serious in-depth information. The below table highlights the average, maximum and minimum on a range of subjects including age, starting price, trip last time out, official ratings, Racing Post Ratings, top speed figures and trip (distance run prior). Course form has been added along with recent runs of the past 10 winners.
