Daryl Carter has all the key stats and trends for the Stayers' Hurdle
The Stayers’ Hurdle is run on the third day of the Cheltenham Festival and is the feature event of Thursday. This race over the years has produced sensational horses that have gone on to achieve multiple successes in this race. In the past 10 year’s Paul Nicholls has been the most successful trainer courtesy of the superstar, Big Buck's, who won this race three consecutive times in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Willie Mullins has landed the prize twice in the last three years with Penhill and Nichols Canyon but it is Paisley Park that all eyes will be drawn to in 2020.
Short and sweet but below I have highlighted some ten year stats and trends that any savvy punter looking to make it pay at the Cheltenham Festival in 2020 will want on their side.
The 2019 running saw a new star emerge in the shape of Paisley Park and the well supported winning favourite was arguably the story of the Cheltenham Festival.

At a glance- 10 year trends
Age Counts:
Or it doesn’t in this race, 7yo’s have the best recent record in the race winning 4/10 and 3 of the last 3 races. 6yo’s, 9yo’s and 8yo’s come out second best all winning twice each in a race where quality comes over age.
Price matters:
5 favourites have won the past 10 renewals of the race with an average SP of 7/1. Horses saddling double figure odds have won three times in what is usually a wide open race if there is no strong short priced favourite.
Britain or Ireland?
Britain has come out on top over their counterparts with 7-3. Willie Mullins has won 2/10 with Penhill and Nichols Canyon both going off at double figure odds.
No Irish SP favourite has won the race in the last 10 years and no Irish horse has won the race with odds lower than the average SP of 7/1.
Recent run:
5 of the last 10 winners had raced at Cheltenham prior to this race.
Official Rating:
The average official rating of the winner is 164.
Penhill, was the lowest rated horse to win the race in the past 10 years with an official rating of 153.
Three time winner Big Buck's was rated 174.
A winner last time out:
7/10 winners won last time out before Cheltenham.
Course form:
10/10 had run at Cheltenham previous to this race and 7/10 had course winning form.
