Brown Advisory

Plenty of stars have emerged from the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase over the years, with the likes of Looks Like Trouble, Denman, Bobs Worth and Lord Windermere all taking the race en route to becoming a Cheltenham Gold Cup winner.

Last year’s renewal was won by Fact To File, who turned the race into a procession under Mark Walsh and this year we could be witnessing another top-class prospect in the shape of Ballyburn who heads the market. Race time is 14.00pm.

Brown Advisory Novices Chase Winners & Trends

  • Seven-year-old’s have the best recent record in the race, winning seven of the last 10 renewals.
  • Nine of the last 10 winners were rated 153 or higher.
  • Single figure SP does prove key - Looking back at the last 10 renewals, every winner has won at an SP of 8/1 or lower.
  • Course experience counts for plenty - interestingly, 11 of the past 12 winners of this contest had at least one previous run at Cheltenham.
  • Last run - Nine of the last 10 winners had finished first or second on their previous start (Champ fell in his previous start in 2020 but would have won).

Brown Advisory Novices Chase Key Runners & Contenders

All eyes will be on Ballyburn, who bids for a second Cheltenham Festival success, having impressed in last season’s Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle.

The seven-year-old’s only defeat in this sphere came at the hands of Sir Gino on his penultimate outing and he resumed winning ways with a fourth Grade 1 success at Leopardstown last time out.

Better Days Ahead could prove to be the solid option for those looking for an each-way angle. Gordon Elliott’s consistent charge won last season’s Martin Pipe at the Cheltenham Festival and he’s unlucky not to be unbeaten in this sphere having been beaten a head by Croke Park in a Grade 1 race on his penultimate start.

He subsequently dug deep to beat last season’s Albert Bartlett winner Stellar Story at Navan and that should have warmed him up nicely for this race. He might not have the class to beat Ballyburn but he certainly has place possibilities.

Stablemate of Ballyburn, Dancing City, has won his last four starts and is unbeaten in two starts in this sphere. He beat The Jukebox Man at Aintree in good style, but was well held in third in the Albert Bartlett when no match for the former or Stellar Story, and it’s hard to see him beating the stable’s number one.

Furthermore, his latest win has been let down by the runner-up. He is a very good horse but minor honours look likely for him again.

Brown Advisory Novices Chase Trainers & Jockeys to Watch

Willie Mullins and Nicky Henderson have both had four winners in this race, followed by Paul Nicholls with three and then a host of trainers with one. As for the jockeys, Paul Townend, Sam Twiston-Davies, Harry Cobden, Nico de Boinville, Mark Walsh and Charlie Deutsch all have one win in the race.

Brown Advisory Novices Chase Betting Tips

BALLYBURN (best price 7/4) has yet to run over three miles, but his handler is adamant it will be the making of him, and both his rating (top-rated), course form and ability make him the one to beat. What’s not to like? I will keep this short and simple. He wins.
