Steve Ryder backs three selections from Tuesday's races at Southwell and Wolverhampton.
13:15 Wolverhampton
Tip 1 - Alfa Patisserie - 0.5pt EW
Best odds of 13/2 at Unibet while publishing.
The Ivan Furtado-trained ALFA PATISSERIE (best priced at 13/2) won on her AW and handicap debut last time at Newcastle, and she should prove hard to beat if transferring that form to Newcastle. The daughter of Kodi Bear ran with credit on her three quick qualifying runs on turf in May and June.
Alfa Patisserie had a 140 day break prior to her 1 ¼ length success in November, and connections have been patient to give her another 50 day break since. The runner-up Popty Ping has boosted its form since and is now rated 6lbs higher so Alfa Patisserie looks well handicapped off only a 4lb higher mark.
18:00 Southwell
Tip 2 - Caramay - 0.5pt EW
Best odds of 9/2 at Betway while publishing.
It is hard to know whether Selenic will prove well handicapped off an opening mark of 72, and I prefer the chances of last year’s winner CARAMAY (best priced at 9/2). The William Muir & Chris Grassick-trained six-year-old won this race last season off a mark of 72 and runs in it this year off only a 1lb higher mark.
Caramay, like last year, arrives here in good form, having won over 1m4f here in December before finishing 3rd, beaten less than two lengths last time. She looks the solid option in the race and is the obvious alternative to the favourite.
18:30 Southwell
Tip 3: R P McMurphy - 1pt Win
Best odds of 2/1 at bet365 while publishing.
The Mick Appleby-trained R P MCMURPHY (best priced at 2/1) has form figures of 33133 in handicaps, and hopefully, first-time cheekpieces can get him back to winning ways. The lightly raced four-year-old was only beaten ½ length at Wolverhampton last time off this mark of 55, when his habit of being slightly slow away meant he was caught back further than ideal.
Cheekpieces will hopefully mean that R P McMurphy can get a better position, and if that is the case, then he should prove hard to beat.
