Men's Second Quarter

Men's Wimbledon 2022 Tips

Following two successful tips in our outright preview last year (Denis Shapovalov to win second quarter 8/1 and Mateo Berretini to win outright 12/1 e/w), the time has come again to preview the pinnacle of the grass court season at Wimbledon and hopefully replicate that feat.

Nothing has really changed in terms of who I think the winner of this tournament will be. Novak Djokovic is again the legitimate odds-on favourite at 5/6 and is in my mind even safer than 2021 if you're looking to back him at that short price.

The reason for that is so far there does not look like a worthy successor to the quality of grass court tennis the likes of Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer have produced over the last decade.

Matteo Berrettini has won two grass court tournaments this season alone, so he's likely the biggest challenger once again but I can't see him getting past Djokovic.

Wimbledon 2022 Draw

Projected Men's Quarter-Finals

Djokovic vs Alcaraz

Ruud vs Hurkacz

Berrettini vs Tsitsipas

Auger-Aliassime vs Nadal

The bottom half of the draw certainly looks the more challenging, with Berrettini, Rafa Nadal, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Stefanos Tsitsipas, as well as former finalist Marin Cilic and last year's semi finalist, Shapovalov.

As the number one seed, Djokovic is in the top half of the draw and looks to have the smoother run on paper. The biggest tests in his quarter look to be rising star Carlos Alcaraz and a certain Murray.

The second quarter is one that interests me from a betting point of view, with Casper Ruud the third seed as a result of the Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev absences.

He is a very classy player on the clay shown by his run to the final at Roland Garros this year but has a lot of work to do in adapting his game for grass. He only has a 30% win rate on the surface and lost his only warm up match during the 2022 warm-up grass court season to Ryan Peniston, the 147th ranked player in the world. That is reflected by his 12/1 odds to come through this quarter.

I am, therefore, very happy to take him on in this quarter and will be backing Hubert Hurkacz at a best price of 11/4 to follow up his first grass court tournament win in Halle last week with a deep run at SW19.

Hurkacz to win Second Quarter - 2pts @ 11/4

Men's Fourth Quarter

The fourth quarter is another one where I will be taking on the top seed in that section of the draw. Nadal is that player (seeded fourth) but is managing an injury following his win in Paris.

Auger-Aliassime has the game to be a big success on this surface in the next few years and I think he can do well at Wimbledon 2022. He had an unlucky draw last year, beating Zverev in five sets in the fourth round and then coming up against Berrettini in the quarters where his challenge ended.

His results in the warm up tournaments at Halle and 's-hertogenbosch have not been fantastic but he does have a 74% win rate on grass and I see him coming through to make his first semi-final at Wimbledon. He's been best priced at 4/1 which I'm very happy to take against 6/4 favourite, Nadal.

Men's Outright Winner

My final tip for the men's draw is for Berrettini to make his second consecutive final and potentially take advantage of an unlikely Djokovic slip up by winning the tournament.

Berrettini looks to have a favourable draw in the early rounds and will likely encounter one of Tsitsipas or Shapovalov in the quarter-finals.

I see him coming through either of those and meeting Auger-Aliassime in the semi-finals, where I think he will squeeze past the Canadian. That is why I'm taking the 6/1 e/w on offer to set up that final against Djokovic with the potential upside.

Women's Projected Quarter-Finals

Swiatek vs Pegula

Badosa vs Pliskova

Collins vs Jabeur

Sakkari vs Kontaveit

As with the men's draw, there is an obvious favourite for this tournment in the form of Iga Swiatek. The Pole has incredibly won her last 35 matches and is the rightful 8/5 favourite.

There is another player that has been in sparkling form on the grass this summer though and that's Beatriz Haddad Maia. She won the Nottingham and Birmingham WTA tournaments in consecutive weeks and is now in the semi finals at Eastbourne.

The top seed in her quarter is Anett Kontaveit but the Estonian second seed has been struggling with Covid-19 since the French Open and hasn't played a warm up tournaments in the build up to Wimbledon.

Maria Sakkari is the other big name in thi quarter and she has a good grass court game she hasn't quite been able to replicate her 2021 form this year, falling in the second round of Roland Garros on her favoured surface.

Haddad Maia is still an attractive price at 5/1 to win the fourth quarter and I'm backing her to follow up her stunning form at SW19.
