Nick Kyrgios

Just over six weeks on from his stunning run to the Wimbledon final, controversial Australian Nick Kyrgios continues to find favour with the oddschecker community as the most backed player on the men’s side for next week’s US Open at Flushing Meadows. 

Despite never going past the third round at the US Open in eight previous visits (eight wins and eight losses from 16 matches), Kyrgios has been backed into a best price of 9/1 to lift the men’s singles trophy on Sunday 11th September. 

To put that in context, before the start of Wimbledon you could have backed Kyrgios for the US Open at 66/1. Upon reaching the final, his price was shortened to between 28/1 and 33/1, before a win at the Citi Open in Washington saw this come in further to a general 14/1. 

As it stands, 33/19 favourite and Kyrgios’ Wimbledon conqueror Novak Djokovic will still not be able to play due to his decision not to be vaccinated against Covid-19, which explains the Australian’s price nibbling in further still into single figure odds. 

Having been forced to miss Wimbledon as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, world number one Daniil Medvedev is back as the second favourite (5/2) for the US Open, while Rafael Nadal is 11/2 despite losing to world number 152 Borna Coric at the Cincinnati Western & Southern Open in his only outing since pulling out from a Wimbledon semi-final against Kyrgios with injury.

At the time of writing, Kyrgios has received 15.90% of the bets on the US Open men’s singles winner through oddschecker since the start of 2022. Interestingly, French Open runner up Carlos Alcaraz (best price 6/1) is the second most backed, having taken 13.47% of the bets.

Emma Raducanu

We’re not quite sure if her form in 2022 justifies such optimism or level of backing through oddschecker, but 19-year-old defending US Open champion Emma Raducanu remains the most backed player for the US Open women’s singles.

Having beaten Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez 6-4 6-3 in last year's final, you could argue that a best price of 25/1 is massive value for the British superstar (the same bet can be found as short as 14/1 through other bookmakers).

However, her win percentage of 73.53% for matches in 2021 (25 wins from 34) has not quite been replicated in this calendar year – despite an encouraging pair of wins in Cincinnati, her win record for 2022 still only reads 13 from 28 matches (46.43%).

Can the green shoots of recovery shown in Cincinnati through dominant wins over both Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka - combined with the feelgood factor of returning to the scene of her greatest triumph - inspire Raducanu to another memorable US Open run?

Since the start of the year, Raducanu has been backed in 22.02% of the bets on the outright market for the women’s singles. World number one Iga Swiatek (9/2) is a distant second with 14.72%.
