Men's Australian Open 2023

Australian Open 2023 Preview

The 2023 Australian Open sees the return of Novak Djokovic to the first Grand Slam of the year with him seeking a record extending tenth Melbourne title and a record equaling 23rd Slam title.

He goes into the tournament as the fourth seed having not participated in the US hard court season as well as his absence from Australia in January 2023.

He is, however, the best price 10/11 odds-on favourite to win this tournament with Daniil Medvedev at 6/1, Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas both 16/1 and Rafael Nadal priced at 18/1.

I see Djokovic as a very strong favourite at the prices following his form at the back end of 2022, winning in Tel Aviv, Astana and Turin, with a final appearance in Paris to boot. He also won in Adelaide last week and it’s very hard to see him not lifting the trophy in two weeks’ time.

Australian Open 2023 Predictions & Betting Tips

Following the draw made yesterday, Tsitsipas is the player that interests me most.

His pedigree in Melbourne is very strong with three semi-final appearances in the last four years and I think he can improve on that in 2023 as he finds himself on the opposite side of the draw to Djokovic.

The main threats to the Greek number on in the second quarter are Jannik Sinner and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Sinner has been improving in year on year in Melbourne, reaching the quarter-final stage last year, where he lost in straight sets to Tsitsipas in a one sided match.

He reached the quarter final stage of three out of four Slams in 2022 and his pedigree continues to rise as an all court player. Tsitsipas leads the head to head with the Italian 4-1 though and should the two meet I think he’d continue to be too good for him.

Felix Auger-Aliassime is another rising star of the game and following a difficult summer his form improved dramatically during the indoor hard court swing at the end of 2022.

He also made the quarter final stage in Melbourne last year, losing to Medvedev in a hard fought five set thriller. Tsitsipas leads their head to head 5-4 and has won the last three hard court meetings. while Auger-Aliassime could give the Greek a very hard time I’m happy to take the 11/4 available on Tsitsipas coming through the second quarter.

Medvedev and Nadal lead the field in the first quarter with another strong young player in Sebastian Korda a potential big threat. Should any of those three players make it to the semi-final, I see Tsitsipas coming out on top to make his first final at the Australian Open.
