Who are the favourites to win the US Open?
In the mens championship, the man who broke that Wimbledon monopoly was the young pretender Carlos Alcaraz, who also won the 2022 edition of the US Open. He is the second favourite, behind the man who he defeated in the Wimbledon final, all-time great Novak Djokovic. Deciding who will triumph between these two is a case of splitting hairs. Alcaraz’ odds come in at 2/1 while Djokovic comes in at 13/10 and it is hard to envisage a final, let alone an outcome, that doesn’t involve these two.
The chasing pack is made up of Jannik Sinner (16/1) and 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev who comes in at 10/1. Both have had strong showings during the 2023 season and would be your best bets if you see anyone breaking male tennis’ new established elite.
In the female championship, last year’s champion and world number one, Iga Šwiątek, is the favourite at 13/5 and faces Swede Rebecca Peterson in the opening round. Šwiątek beat Tunisian Ons Jabeur in the final last time out, and Jabeur was also on the losing side during this year’s Wimbledon Championships. At 28/1, and edging ever closer to her first Grand Slam, Jabeur presents a great outside option. She will be desperate to turn silver into gold in the New York sunshine.
2023 US Open Predictions: Can anyone stop Novak Djokovic?
The question for many will be whether Alcaraz can repeat his famous Wimbledon victory over Djokovic on the hard courts. Alcaraz beat Casper Ruud in the 2022 final with Djokovic unavailable due to not being vaccinated against COVID-19.
Since his return, Djokovic has shown no signs of slowing down. He has won the 2023 editions of the Australian and French Opens, and will be hoping that his loss to Alcaraz at Wimbledon will be but a blip in his vast collection of major titles. The draw means the two can only face each other in the final, and I can’t see it going any other way. Young pretender vs. all-time great certainly makes for great reading, and it will make for even greater viewing. But, if anyone can beat Djokovic, it will be Alcaraz. The stage is set.
Alcaraz may face Daniel Evans in the third round, an unfortunate draw for the Birmingham native. As for other British hopes, Andy Murray is in the same bracket as Evans and fellow Brit Cam Norrie. Murray, who recently pulled out of Cincinnati and Toronto tournaments due to an abdominal injury, could come up against 19th seed Grigor Dimitrov in round two should he beat French 71st seed Corentin Moutet in the opening fixture.
Emma Raducanu, who famously won the tournament in 2021 to become the first qualifier to win a major, will not be participating due to ankle and wrist surgeries. British hopes will instead be placed upon outside bets Katie Boulter and Jodie Burrage - neither are yet to progress to the last 16 in a major.
2023 US Open Betting Tips
My tip for the 2023 US open is the woman who comes in slightly behind Šwiątek as the bookies favourite for the crown, Aryna Sabalenka. The world number two won the Australian Open on the hard court in January, and victory at Flushing Meadows will guarantee her the top spot in the world rankings also. There’s a lot on the line and at 5/1, she offers excellent odds.
