2023 MLB Draft Grades: Grading Every Team's Draft Haul

The MLB Draft is finally complete.

A lot can happen between now and the next couple of months. Players can return to college or sign a deal with their new team. So we don't know exactly where every single player will wind up. But we have a good idea from prospects drafted in the first few rounds.

Here are draft grades based on Day 1 (and a little of Day 2) in the MLB Draft.

Arizona Diamondbacks: A-

Arizona went with many experienced college players with their haul this season. They only grabbed one high school player, and that was in Round 20. They're adding guys who can make an impact in a couple of years.

With the success they've had recently, that was the way to go.

Atlanta Braves: B+

The Braves added four pitchers in their first five selections. The Braves locked up a lot of positional talent. Now they want to build a star-studded rotation. I like the direction they went.

Baltimore Orioles: A-

The Orioles are in the same boat as the Diamondbacks. They're competitive and have a lot of young talent coming up. Therefore, they don't want to be patient anymore. They went with many college athletes who could see the majors in a few years. Enrique Bradfield Jr. was an awesome first-round selection too.

Boston Red Sox: B+

Boston will have to be patient. They added Kyle Teel at 14, which was awesome. Then they brought in Nazzan Zanetello, a very mature high-school senior. They have high-character guys who will eventually fit in with the ball club.

Chicago Cubs: C+

The Cubs went after players with another year of college eligibility. They added three juniors in college with their first-round picks and then went with high school athletes after that. Chicago isn't looking to compete right now. Matt Shaw was also a bit of a reach with their first pick.

Chicago White Sox: B-

I liked Jacob Gonzalez as their first pick. But Grant Taylor, with their second pick, was a major risk. He didn't even play this year due to injury.

Cincinnati Reds: A

The Reds continue to dominate drafts. I had them earning an A last year and an A this year. They brought in Rhett Lowder and Ty Floyd with their first two picks. Lowder and Floyd pitched in the College World Series and had incredible success.

The bats are destroying the Reds. The pitching will soon too.

Cleveland Guardians: C

The Guardians went reaching for Ralphy Velazquez. But if he's their guy, then he's their guy. Honestly, they reached for Andrew Walters and C.J. Kayfus too. They're trusting their scouts, but no other analysts agree.

Colorado Rockies: B

The Rockies have the worst pitching year after year. Chase Dollander and Sean Sullivan should help. But this isn't a great fit for either of those two. However, I did like Cole Carrigg, who is a switch-hitting catcher. He's got a ton of potential.

Detroit Tigers: A-

Detroit got the best high school talent. I felt like Wyatt Langford would've been a better selection. But the addition of Clark and Kevin McGonigle was pretty sweet. Both are high school kids with so much potential.

Houston Astros: C+

Brice Matthews, as the first selection, has my head spinning. There were plenty of other shortstops I liked more in this spot. But the signing bonus won't be too high with Matthews compared to others. I felt Houston reached a lot and didn't get a great haul.

Kansas City Royals: C+

Blake Mitchell over Kyle Teel in the first round? We'll see. However, the Royals made up for that blunder with Hunter Own with their fourth selection. That was a great find.

Los Angeles Angels: C

With many better prospects on the board, the Angels went with Nolan Schanuel at 11. He's got a solid power bat. But the whole lineup can't just be power and strikeout for the Angels. They need to balance out their lineup. This won't help.

Los Angeles Dodgers: B-

The Dodgers went with Kendall George with their 36th pick. That was a reach. But they added Jake Gelof of Virginia with their second pick. If you swapped these two picks, I would've been fine. So I guess this will work. The Dodgers will be able to sign Gelof for a smaller price tag.

Miami Marlins: B

The Marlins went with two high school pitchers with their first two picks. But they got solid talent. Noble Meyer is a gem, and Thomas White could be a filthy lefty in the big leagues. They'll be patient. But I like what they did.

Milwaukee Brewers: B

Eric Bitonti, with pick 87, was awesome. Brock Wilken was cool at 18 as well. They'll overspend on Josh Knoth and Mike Boeve, but I thought the early haul was solid for Milwaukee overall.

Minnesota Twins: B

Minnesota added Walker Jenkins at five. He was the second-best high-school talent in the draft and was projected to land at that spot. Minnesota didn't dominate the rest of the draft, in my opinion. But Jenkins absolutely helps their grade.

New York Mets: B+

New York added Colin Houck at 32. He was projected to go in the top 15. They also landed Brandon Sproat, who will sign with the Mets now. New York is feeling confident about their selections. There weren't too many reaches, if any. I like what New York did/

New York Yankees: B

The Yankees didn't have a second-round pick. That automatically hurts their score. George Lombard Jr. wasn't a terrible first-round selection, but I felt like the Yankees really tried to find gems nobody knew about and reached a lot. We'll see if it works out.

Oakland Athletics: B

Oakland knows they're far away from competing. So they went after a lot of high school players and college juniors. If the Athletics have the same ownership in five years, none of these guys will even be on the roster. They'll be traded if they're any good.

Philadelphia Phillies: B

Philadelphia went with the high school senior approach. They took three high school seniors with their first three selections. Aidan Miller was an awesome get with their first pick, but I have questions about their round-three pick in Devin Saltiban.

Pittsburgh Pirates: A

The Pirates were rumored to be thinking about a high school prospect over Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews. The Pirates eventually settled on Skenes, which was the right thing to do. They also added solid prospects like Mitch Jebb and Garrett Forrester. I was satisfied with Pittsburgh's draft. Skenes was a huge get.

San Diego Padres: B+

San Diego added Dillon Head with their first overall. That made sense. J.D. Gonzalez at 96 was a bit of a reach, but Homer Bush Jr. at 128 was a nice get.

San Francisco Giants: A-

The Giants are hoping to land the next Shohei Ohtani. There were a lot of two-way players selected this year. But Bryce Eldridge is projected to be the best of those two-way players. The Giants took a chance. So we'll see what happens. However, the additions of Walker Martin, Joe Whitman, and Maui Ahuna solidified their draft even if the Eldridge experiment failed.

Seattle Mariners: B+

The Mariners had three selections in the top 30. They might've reached with Tai Peete at 30, but there's no denying they brought in a solid haul with their early selections.

St. Louis Cardinals: B+

St. Louis added three college athletes in the first four rounds. They added Chase Davis, Travis Honeyman, and Quinn Matthews. That's two outfielders and a pitcher that could be up in a couple of years. I liked what the Cardinals did early.

Tampa Bay Rays: B+

The Rays love their athletes. They drafted three shortstops in the first five picks. Brayden Taylor, Adrian Santana, and Colton Ledbetter were drafted in the first two rounds. You can never second-guess the Rays and their farm system's development.

Texas Rangers: A

The Rangers love to draft pitching. But they added Wyatt Langford with their first selection, which was huge. Langford has a power bat that helped lead the Florida Gators to an NCAA College Baseball World Series appearance. He's a stud.

Toronto Blue Jays: B-

Toronto brought in Arjun Nimmala and then added three pitchers while reaching on a couple of them. It wasn't a bad draft. They brought in a college of college talent that can compete in a couple of years in the big leagues. So that's always a plus.

Washington Nationals: A+

Dylan Crews at two was a no-brainer. He reached base in every game he played and helped LSU win a College World Series. The Nationals also added Yohandy Morales and Travis Sykora with their next two selections. That's an A+ draft early on.
