USA basketball continues its quest for a fourth straight gold medal at the Olympics. Their last challenge standing in the way is France in the final. Team USA are heavily favored in this matchup priced at -715 to take home gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In the professional era, the team won the Olympic gold medal in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2008, 2012, and 2016. Team USA are the three-time defending gold-medal winner and looking to extend this run.
Team USA got off to a shaky start in these Tokyo Olympics. Following a disappointing 7th place finish in the 2019 FIBA Word Cup, their worse finish ever in an international tournament, this team has something left to prove to the world.
Once again Team USA got out to a slow start against Australia in the semifinal just as they did in the quarterfinal. USA was down 15 at one point in the first half but managed an 8-0 run to close out, cutting the Australians lead down to three at halftime. Backed by strong defensive performances from Bam Adabayo and Draymond Green, Australia was held to just 3-16 to open in the second half. Team USA opened the third quarter on a 12-0 run. Carrying over from the first half that equaled a 20-0 run to jump out to a commanding lead. Kevin Durant continued to show his leadership which is important at this high-level of basketball when a team is down. With the help of NBA champion Jrue Holiday (11 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists) and Devin Booker (20 points) Team USA was able to defeat Australia brilliantly 97-78.
Olympic Men’s Basketball Odds: USA vs. France
To retain its gold medal Team USA will need to beat France. In its semifinal matchup with Slovenia, France had to overcome a triple-double from Luka Doncic. In a nail-biting 90-89 victory, France was saved in the closing seconds by a block at the rim by Nicolas Batum to seal its victory and chance to play for the gold medal.
Team USA basketball got off to an auspicious start in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when they lost to France 83-76 in their opening game. It marked their first loss in the Olympic games since 2004 when they won the bronze medal. France has beaten Team USA in back-to-back games now.
Devin Booker and Jayson Tatum have proven to be offensive weapons for Team USA as scorers. Kevin Durant may need their help for Team USA to overcome this staunch French defensive side.
Team USA cannot go out and win anymore with just an average performance. The number of countries that now boast a starting lineup filled out by NBA players are here. France has NBA players Evan Fournier, Rudy Gobert, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, Nicolas Batum, and Frank Ntlikina.
France has been to the gold medal game only twice before. Losing to Team USA at the 1948 London and 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Slovenia will play Australia for the bronze medal on Saturday night
