NBA MVP Race: Can DeMar DeRozan Maintain His MVP Resume?

The Chicago Bulls didn’t receive the love they deserved for the last free agency period, and that is in large part due to DeMar DeRozan and the “expensive” contract that he received from the Bulls.

Before we dive into any of DeRozan’s stats or takes, let’s just mention the fact that the Bulls are 39-25, which is good for the fourth seed, and three games behind the first seed.

NBA Regular Season MVP Winner Odds

DeRozan on the season is averaging a career-high 28.1 PPG, which is good for fourth in the entire league, on 51.2% shooting from the field and a career-high 36.4% from the three-point line.

Needless to say DeRozan is having the best season of his career while still winning games, and he’s not taking away from his teammates. Zach LaVine, DeRozan’s running mate, is averaging 24.6 PPG, which silences the “they won’t work together” narrative. Another narrative around this team is put down.

The Bulls are winning, DeRozan is playing well, the team is finding success, but what else? Just recently, DeRozan put together a stretch that not even Michael Jordan put together, by averaging 35 PPG on 50% shooting or better over an eight-game span.

Whenever DeRozan is counted out of the MVP race, he seamlessly beefs up his MVP resume. If the Bulls remain near the top of the Eastern Conference as the season winds down, then DeRozan should be a finalist for the MVP with a chance to win it.
