It’s rare for a preseason favorite to keep hold of the NBA MVP race from start to finish. Since 2006, only three players have been able to accomplish the feat, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and Giannis Antetokounmpo. This year Luka Doncic is looking to become the fourth.

NBA MVP Race
Luka Doncic entered the year as the preseason MVP favorite for the second straight year. He was given +425 odds at the start of the year, just ahead of Giannis and Joel Embiid. With nearly half of the season gone, Doncic remains the favorite.
Luka Doncic's MVP odds are leading the NBA MVP race. He’s given +300 odds, or an implied 25% chance to take home the award. Just like in preseason, it’s Giannis who’s just behind him at +350, or an implied 22.2% chance.
The market is tight at the top. Jayson Tatum +425, Nikola Jokic +500, and Kevin Durant +800 are all given better than a 10% chance to be MVP. At this time last year, the only players given better than a 10% chance to win MVP were Nikola Jokic, Embiid, and Giannis. So, it’s pretty unusual for there to still be five players still in the hunt this deep into the season.
What Luka’s doing this year is historic. He’s averaging 34 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 8.7 assists per game. Only three other players have ever topped 30, 8, and 8 in a season: Russell Westbrook, Michael Jordan, and Oscar Robertson. Nobody has ever averaged 33, 8, and 8, and Luka is at 34, 8, and 8.
Luka is on pace for seven 50+ point games this season, becoming only the fifth player ever to do so, joining Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and James Harden. Honestly, the biggest shock here is that Luka isn’t the runaway NBA MVP favorite at this point in the NBA MVP race.
