Nikola Jokic is trying to do something that even greats like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, and LeBron James have never done. That’s winning three straight MVP awards. Just a few weeks ago Jokic was on the outside looking in, but he’s now reestablished himself as the clear favorite.

Jokic is EVEN or has an implied 50% chance to win his third straight MVP. A mark that only Bill Russell, Larry Bird, and Wilt Chamberlain have ever accomplished. This comes after Jokic was given +500 odds, or just a 16.7% chance on January 6th, he was fourth on the market behind Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Jayson Tatum. Just two weeks later he’s unchallenged.
Luka has seen his odds fall from +300 to +425, or a change from an implied 25% chance to a 19% chance. Giannis fell from +350 to +1100, or a change from a 22.2% chance to an 8.1% chance. Jayson Tatum fell from +425 to +700, or a change from a 19% chance to a 12.5% chance.
Joel Embiid has also seen his odds rise from +2000 to +900, but he remains far off the leaders. If anyone’s going to catch Jokic though, Embiid is the guy with the momentum to do so potentially.
What Nikola Jokic has done this season is flat-out phenomenal. He’s on the verge of averaging a triple-double, with 25 points per game, and shooting over 62% from the field. He’d become just the third player ever to average a triple-double and the first big man ever to do it. All while leading the Nuggets to the second-best record in the NBA. As great a season as Luka Doncic is having, it’s nearly impossible to beat that. So, Jokic has quickly shot past him on the market. The award is again Jokic’s to lose in the eyes of the books.
