James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers may be on the outs, with latest reports anticipating that he may miss the season opener against the Bucks, and speculating when he will take the court, if at all.
Harden last reported to Sixers practice over a week ago, and returned to Houston to spend time with family and take care of his mother. But the timing of the absence just a week before the season begins has certainly fueled the rumor mill of a potential deal.
Harden and Sixers President Daryl Morey have a well-documented rocky relationship that flamed out over the summer. Formerly best pals, Harden accused Morey and the front office of not holding up their end of the bargain regarding a new contract for the superstar, and

James Harden has been vying for a trade to the Clippers for some time now, dating back to the original extension signing in July. The two sides have been in deep talks throughout the offseason, but the 76ers are still unhappy with the offers coming from the other side.
The Clippers would be a great fit for Harden, as he seeks to join Paul George and Kawhi Leonard. Los Angeles made it to the Western Conference Finals in 2021 before falling short against the Suns. They were subsequently eliminated by the Suns again in the first round of the 2023 playoffs.
Harden could be the missing piece to get the Clippers over the hump, and the betting odds certainly favor them as the best landing spot. If they are able to work out a deal at some point in the first few weeks of the season, their NBA title odds would soar to the top with the Bucks, Celtics, and Suns.

Harden is very fond of Houston, despite the disastrous ending to his tenure there. He forced his way out after several failed playoff attempts, and went off to the Brooklyn Nets before arriving in Philly.
Harden has spent a lot of time in Houston in recent months, reportedly to take care of his sick mother. He has many family connections to the area, and has also been seen partying in clubs there every offseason.
The Rockets may be a ways away from returning to contention, tied with the Spurs for the lowest NBA title odds, but that doesn't mean Harden couldn't return to his old team to escape the current situation.
