The New York Knicks set the league on fire for a couple weeks with an exciting run to the Eastern Conference Finals in this year's NBA Playoffs. While Tom Thibodeau brought this team to new heights, the criticisms of his starting lineup obsession and lack of bench play gave poor optics to his situation after the Knicks fell flat against the Pacers for the second year in a row.
Ultimately, he was fired last Tuesday, and the Knicks are still on the hunt for a new coach one week later. The franchise realizes how strong their roster currently is, and doesn't want to squander their potential championship window. That's what makes this next coaching search so critical, and why the odds are flying around as they explore a wide variety of candidates. Let's take a look at the latest odds movement as a new report details their desire for Jason Kidd to take over at Madison Square Garden.

Knicks Next Head Coach Betting Favorites
Jason Kidd (-160)
The current Dallas Mavericks head coach has soared to the front of the Knicks head coaching search, at least according to DraftKings Sportsbook. They moved the line aggressively this afternoon, following an ESPN appearance by Brian Windhorst, where he detailed the Knicks' desires to steal Kidd away from Dallas.
There is a precedent here, especially with Kidd involved. He previously coached the Brooklyn Nets over a decade ago, and then orchestrated a trade to the Milwaukee Bucks, where Brooklyn sent Kidd to become the Bucks head coach in exchange for two first round picks.
Given that Kidd previously played for the Knicks, and has a penchant for dramatic league moves, it's likely that he would love to become the next head coach in New York. When the Knicks are good, it's one of the most coveted jobs in basketball, but certainly a stressful and pressure-filled position.
The Mavs already had quite the shake-up this year with Luka Doncic getting traded mid season, without the knowledge of Kidd himself. He may harbor some ongoing conflict with GM Nico Harrison, and may want to get out of dodge as the offseason hits. If this report is to be believed, the Knicks certainly want him, it all lies with how much they're willing to give up to make a deal if Dallas agrees.
Johnnie Bryant (+140)
Johnnie Bryant has bumped up from +300 in the initial odds to the second-favorite here. He was in first position before this Kidd news broke, but is still very much in the mix if that doesn't materialize. Bryant has a strong pedigree of assistant coaching, and was coveted by several teams already.
He's never been a head coach though, and with the pressure of the New York job, they may not want to take a chance on a slightly experienced candidate as far as this role goes.
Michael Malone (+850)
The former Nuggets coach has cratered down in the odds after starting off as the clear favorite last week. He was as high as +125 on the day Tom Thibodeau got fired, but nothing has materialized between the two sides. It's looking less likely that they grab the 2023 NBA Champion as they explore other candidates.
