During the NBA offseason, the summer league is just one of the many storylines that keeps the media cycle turning. When there aren't a ton of free agents to discuss, there is always old reliable, LeBron James. Even though he's not an eligible free agent, the current top story is whether or not he will suit up for the Los Angeles Lakers this coming Fall.
Earlier this offseason, a leaked video of LeBron at dinner had him quoted as saying "Savannah wants me to retire after this season", alluding to his wife's desire to see him wrap up his extended playing career. We saw this type of discussion with Tom Brady a few years ago, and since led to him splitting up with his wife, Gisele Bundchen, over his refusal to hang up the cleats.
Since then, a potential LeBron trade to either the Mavs or Cavs has picked up steam in the media. His agent, Rich Paul, said that four teams have inquired about making a deal for the aging superstar. They also noted that the Lakers are building for the future while LeBron wants to compete for a Championship now, in a cryptic comment of sorts.
If LeBron did get traded before the start of the season, it wouldn't quite top that Luka trade, but it is ironic to see these two teams potentially making a deal again after the chaos that followed Mavs GM Nico Harrison last February.

Latest LeBron James Retirement Odds From Kalshi
LeBron is now favored to join the Mavericks if he gets traded, with +300 odds to play his first minute in Dallas this year. That's the second-highest chance outside of the obvious Lakers at -340, which has fallen from -1000 at DraftKings Sportsbook.
Amid this chaos, his odds of retirement at the end of next season have risen to 33% or about +200, up from 22% (+350) at this time last week. The market has gone as high as 52% on June 30th for Yes - Retirement, and as low as 11% back in mid-June.
LeBron was allegedly not informed about the sale of the Lakers to Los Angeles Dodgers owner, Mark Walter, a few weeks ago. He wasn't pleased with the announcement, giving him potentially less control over the franchise with an unknown commodity. Could that force him into early retirement or lead him to demand a trade?

What are the Chances of the LeBron James Retiring This Year?
Based on this trend, it looks like the oddsmakers are leaning away from this being his final season, with it only ever peaking as high as 50ish percent. He will turn 41 at the end of December this year, entering this 2025-26 season at the age of 40.
In modern times, players like Udonis Haslem and Vince Carter played until they were 43 years old. It would take James two more years after this upcoming season to hit that.
While his main desire was to stay in the league to play with his son, they sort of accomplished that for part of last season with the Lakers. Bronny spent most of the year in the G-League, and definitely has a lot of improving to do if he's going to stay on an NBA roster. An NBA insider has reported that Bronny would likely leave the Lakers if LeBron went somewhere else, with LA changing owners and only truly drafting him to appease their star.
