5 Minute ReadNBA Play-In Tournament Odds: Will Hornets, Raptors, 76ers Start in Play-In Tournament Next Week?
With two games left in the regular season, the Eastern Conference has turned into a traffic jam around the 6-line. The Raptors, Magic, 76ers, Hornets, and Heat are all still part of the postseason picture, but only one of those teams currently sits in the true playoff bracket at No. 6, while the others are staring at the play-in. After games on April 8, the NBA’s official playoff picture had Toronto 6th, Orlando 7th, Philadelphia 8th, Charlotte 9th, and Miami 10th.
That is why the “make the play-in” market can look a little strange next to the “make the regular playoffs” market. The play-in format sends the 7, 8, 9, and 10 seeds into a mini-tournament: 7 hosts 8, with the winner grabbing the No. 7 playoff seed; 9 hosts 10, with the loser eliminated; then the loser of 7-8 hosts the winner of 9-10 for the No. 8 seed. So a team sitting 7th or 8th can still have very strong “make playoffs” odds because it may only need one win, while a 9th- or 10th-place team has a much harder path and usually must win twice.

NBA Play-In Tournament Odds Breakdown
Charlotte Hornets (-2500 to Make Play-In) (-104 to Make Playoff Field)
Charlotte is priced at -2500 to make the play-in, which makes sense because the Hornets are sitting 9th and currently in the bracket. The bigger question is whether they can climb out of it. Their “make the regular playoffs” price of about -104 shows the market still gives them a legitimate path, but that is a much tougher ask than simply staying in the top 10. Charlotte had won seven of nine before the Boston game and has been one of the hottest teams in this cluster, powered by an elite three-point attack and strong offensive shot creation.
The remaining schedule is also clear. Charlotte has Detroit on April 10 and then finishes at New York on April 12. That gives the Hornets two meaningful games against playoff-caliber opponents, and they likely need at least one win plus help above them to escape the 9-10 range. If they stay 9th, they would have to beat Miami and then also beat the loser of the 7-8 game just to reach the playoffs, which is why their regular-playoff odds are so much shorter than those of teams higher in the table.
Orlando Magic (-1000 to Make Play-In) (-210 to Make Playoff Field)
Orlando is -1000 to make the play-in, but the more interesting number is -210 to make the regular playoffs. That reflects how valuable the current 7th-place position is. The Magic just beat Minnesota for their fourth straight win, climbed ahead of Philadelphia, and now control a much more favorable play-in path than the teams below them. If the season ended today, Orlando would host the 76ers in the 7-8 game and would need only one win to clinch the No. 7 seed.
Orlando’s last two games are both on the road: at Chicago on April 10 and at Boston on April 12. The recent form is encouraging, and Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Desmond Bane have looked increasingly sharp together, but the closing schedule is not soft. The Magic’s mission is simple: hold 7th at minimum, and maybe catch Toronto for 6th if the Raptors slip. That is why they are such a strong favorite to at least make the play-in but still only a moderate favorite to skip it.
Philadelphia 76ers (-210 to Make Play-In) (-850 to Make Playoff Field)
Philadelphia is -210 to make the play-in, and the regular-playoff number of -850 shows how much faith the market still has in the Sixers reaching the actual field of eight. That looks aggressive on first glance, but it is really a reflection of where they sit. Philadelphia is currently 8th, which means even if it does not climb to 6th, it would still get two chances to win one game and reach the playoffs. That structural advantage is why its playoff odds are much stronger than Charlotte’s even though the records are close.
The Sixers have a difficult but manageable finish with at Indiana on April 10 and Milwaukee on April 12. They recently slipped after a loss to San Antonio and fell behind Orlando, but the returns of Joel Embiid and Paul George have at least given them a higher ceiling than some of the teams around them. If Philadelphia wins out, it has a real shot to jump to 6th. If it stays 7th or 8th, it is still in far better shape than the 9-10 group because it would not need to run two straight elimination-style wins.
Toronto Raptors (+130 to Make Play-In) (-1450 to Make Playoff Field)
Toronto is the fascinating one because the market has it at +130 to make the play-in, but -1450 to make the regular playoffs. That is just a direct reflection of current position: the Raptors are 6th right now, which keeps them out of the play-in entirely, and they control their own fate. Toronto just beat Miami 121-95 to strengthen that spot, and its record has been good enough to keep it just ahead of Orlando and Philadelphia in this late scramble.
The remaining schedule is tricky but not impossible: vs. Miami on April 9, at New York on April 10, and vs. Brooklyn on April 12. Toronto has three games left while most of the other teams have two, which gives it more chances to either secure 6th or fumble it away. The reason the play-in number is plus money is that the margin is still thin. But if the Raptors win the games they should win, especially against Miami and Brooklyn, they are the most likely team in this cluster to stay out of the play-in altogether.
Atlanta Hawks (+430 to Make Play-In)
Atlanta is the longshot in the “make the play-in” market at +430, but that is only because the Hawks are actually trying to avoid it, not get into it. They are sitting 5th and are still fighting to stay in the top six. The Hawks just lost a key game in Cleveland, which kept them from clinching a playoff berth, but they remain ahead of Toronto in the standings and still have the edge if they take care of business late. Their late-season form had been excellent before the recent stumbles, with one report noting they had won 18 of 21 before the slide.
Atlanta’s remaining schedule still matters a lot. The Hawks are at Cleveland now and then finish the regular season with more chances to either lock 5th or tumble into danger if they keep slipping. They are not in the same bucket as Miami or Charlotte because they are still above the line, but the existence of this price reminds you how tight the East has become. If Atlanta drops into 7th, all the math changes quickly.
Miami Heat (+360 to Make Playoff Field)
Miami is not on that first market board because the Heat are effectively locked into the play-in picture. They are 10th in the East in the current NBA bracket, and the official play-in projection has them slated to visit Charlotte in the 9-10 game. That means they can no longer avoid the play-in at this point. Their issue now is not whether they make it, but whether they can survive it from the hardest position on the board. As the No. 10 seed, Miami would need to win two straight road-style survival games just to reach the playoffs, which is why they are +360 odds to make it.
The recent form is ugly. Miami has lost nine of its last 12 and just got blasted by Toronto. The final schedule is at Toronto on April 9, at Washington on April 10, and vs. Atlanta on April 12, but even if the Heat close well, they are boxed into the play-in structure now. That is the exact reason the 9-10 seeds are so dangerous in futures markets: one bad night and the season ends immediately.
