5 Minute ReadJaylen Brown Poised to Help Sixers Get Over Hump After Getting Traded for Paul George as Celtics Relationship Deteriorated
The NBA offseason has already been defined by blockbuster star movement, and Philadelphia just made one of the biggest swings yet. The 76ers are acquiring Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics in a deal that sends Paul George and four draft picks to Boston, giving Philadelphia a younger, more explosive two Boston Celtics in a deal that sends Paul George and four draft picks to Boston, giving Philadelphia-way star next to Joel Embiid.
The market reacted immediately. Philadelphia moved from +7000 to +2500 to win the NBA Finals, while its Eastern Conference odds climbed to +1000, putting the Sixers sixth on the board in the East. Boston, meanwhile, fell from +700 to +1000 to win the title and from +300 to +400 to win the Eastern Conference, dropping behind the Knicks after losing Brown, adding Mitchell Robinson and failing to land Giannis Antetokounmpo last week.

Philadelphia 76ers 2027 Odds Breakdown
Philadelphia 76ers NBA Finals Odds (+2500)
The Sixers’ move from +7000 to +2500 is a massive jump, and it reflects how much Brown changes their ceiling. Paul George was supposed to be the missing playoff wing in Philadelphia, but injuries, age and inconsistency kept that fit from ever becoming trustworthy. Brown gives the Sixers a younger, more physical and more durable star who can score in transition, defend elite wings and create offense without needing every possession built around him.
The new core is intriguing. Embiid remains the franchise centerpiece if healthy, Brown gives Philadelphia a proven championship-level wing, and Edgecombe adds athleticism, energy and defensive upside as a rookie. If the Sixers can keep enough shooting and secondary playmaking around them, this roster suddenly has a much cleaner playoff identity than it had with George.
The concern is still obvious. Philadelphia’s title hopes remain tied to Embiid’s health, and the Sixers paid a major draft price to make this move. Brown makes them far more dangerous, but +2500 still keeps them in the second tier because the roster needs stability, depth and a full season of chemistry before it can be treated like a true favorite.
Philadelphia 76ers Eastern Conference Odds (+1000)
Philadelphia is now +1000 to win the East, sitting sixth on the conference board. That is a major climb from where the Sixers were before the trade, but it also shows the market is not ready to fully crown them after one move.
The East is loaded at the top. The Knicks are now ahead of Boston, Miami has already made its own superstar splash, and the Celtics still remain in the mix despite their roster shakeup. Philadelphia has moved into the contender conversation, but it still has to prove this new group can survive the long regular season and handle a playoff bracket filled with elite wing and frontcourt matchups.
Brown gives the Sixers exactly what they needed, though. He can take defensive pressure off Edgecombe, reduce the burden on Embiid late in games and bring a championship edge to a roster that has repeatedly fallen short in the postseason. At +1000, the East number is more aggressive than it would have looked a week ago, but it is not outrageous if Brown fits quickly.
What Jaylen Brown Changes
Brown gives Philadelphia a playoff-tested wing in his prime. He is coming off a career-best offensive season and has already shown he can thrive deep into May and June, something Philadelphia has desperately needed around Embiid.
The fit is cleaner than George’s because Brown still brings force. He can pressure the rim, defend physically and run the floor, which should help Philadelphia play faster when Embiid is off the ball or trailing possessions. He also gives the Sixers another late-clock scorer who can get to his spots without requiring an entire offense to bend around him.
The biggest impact may be on Edgecombe. Rather than being asked to immediately become the franchise’s next perimeter star, he can develop alongside Brown, learn from a proven two-way wing and bring athleticism without carrying an unrealistic scoring burden right away.
What This Means For Boston
Boston’s side of the trade is much more complicated. The Celtics fell from +700 to +1000 to win the NBA Finals and from +300 to +400 to win the East, which signals real market concern after losing Brown.
The relationship with Brown appeared to deteriorate during the attempted Giannis trade period. Brown’s name surfaced repeatedly in major trade talks, Boston failed to land Giannis, and the franchise ultimately pivoted into a deal with Philadelphia instead. Even if the Celtics got value back, losing a longtime star after weeks of trade speculation creates real chemistry and identity questions.
The Celtics added Mitchell Robinson, and George gives them a veteran scoring wing if healthy, but this is a very different team now. Brown’s physicality, defensive versatility and long-standing partnership with Jayson Tatum are gone. Boston may still be talented, but the market no longer views the Celtics as the clear East favorite.
76ers Championship Odds Outlook
Philadelphia is clearly better after this trade. Brown is a better long-term bet than George, and his fit with Embiid and Edgecombe gives the Sixers a more dynamic, physical and balanced core.
The odds move from +7000 to +2500 is justified, but the Sixers are not a finished championship team yet. They still need Embiid healthy, Edgecombe ready earlier than expected and enough shooting around Brown to keep the offense from getting crowded.
The Celtics’ market slide also matters. Boston is still dangerous, but losing Brown, missing out on Giannis and reshaping the roster around George and Robinson creates uncertainty. Philadelphia may not be ahead of Bosto yet, but the gap has tightened fast.
