Andy Ruiz Jr. vs. Luis Ortiz Start Time

When: September 4, 2022, 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT

Heavyweights are back this weekend inside of Crypto.com Arena on Sunday night in Los Angeles, as Andy “Destroyer” Ruiz Jr. returns to the ring to take on Luis “King Kong” Ortiz. With a combined 50 KOs between the two, both clearly have one-punch power, amongst the strongest in the sport.

This matchup will also feature a fight between an orthodox stance (Ruiz Jr.) and a southpaw stance (Ortiz), adding another level of intrigue to an already intriguing fight. Though no titles are on the line, the winner of this one will almost certainly be in line for one moving forward into 2023.

Let’s take a closer look at both fighters, as well as where the odds are headed as Sunday night in LA approaches.

Andy Ruiz Jr. (34-2-0, 22 KOs)

At 29 years old, now three years ago, Ruiz Jr. shocked the world by becoming the first Mexican boxer to win a heavyweight title in his TKO of Anthony Joshua at Madison Square Garden as a massive underdog. In the rematch six months later, however, Joshua got the unanimous decision to get back his WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO titles.

Since that defeat, Ruiz Jr. got back in the win column in May 2021 with a unanimous decision win over Chris Arreola. It is worth noting that the decision win was just his second that went to the judge’s scorecards over his last five wins dating back to 2018.

Luis Ortiz (33-2, 28 KOs)

With just two losses to his name, Ortiz is now a grizzly veteran at 43 years of age with both of those losses coming to Deontay Wilder; a former heavyweight world champion. Outside of those losses, seven of Ortiz’s last eight wins have all come via KO/TKO, as he has shown a propensity to end fights well before the final bell.

In his last two wins in November 2020 and January 2022, Ortiz KO/TKO’d both opponents in the 1st and 6th rounds, respectively. Now good friends with Wilder, he might even have him in his corner come Sunday night in Los Angeles.

Andy Ruiz Jr. vs Luis Ortiz Odds
