Liam Smith will put his recently acquired WBO Inter-Continental light-middleweight title on the line this Saturday, as challenger Hassan “Tornado” Mwakinyo will look to snatch it from him. Liam Smith (31-3-1, 18 KOs)
Following the biggest win of his career last April in New York at Madison Square Garden over Jessie Vargas, Smith returns home to Liverpool on Saturday to put those titles on the line. The current WBO and WBA light-middleweight champ, Smith comes into this fight having won five of his past six, with four of those wins coming inside of the distance.
It's also worth noting that Smith still holds the WBC Silver light-middleweight title, a belt he picked up in his March 2019 TKO win over Sam Eggington right here at Echo Arena in Liverpool, England. Now making his triumphant return, a win here would be of even great significance and set himself up for a super fight in early 2023.
Hassan Mwakinyo (20-2, 14 KOs)
Smith will have to do his defending against one of the hardest hitters in the division, as Mwakinyo is best known for his one-punch power which has stopped 14 of his 22 professional opponents dead in their tracks. As far as coming into enemy territory, Mwakinkyo has experience there too, taking out Sam Eggington in his hometown of Birmingham back in 2018.
Having not lost since a 2017 decision vs. Lendrush Akopian, Mwainkyo has since racked up 10 straight wins including the last three via TKO, the most recent inside of four rounds vs. Julius Indongo. With a win here setting Mwakinyo on a trajectory for stardom, I think we see the best performance of his career and Smith would be wise to not take this fight lightly.
