Joseph Diaz (32-2-1, 15 KOs)

A former junior lightweight champion, Diaz most recently lost to Devin Haney in a close fight for the WBC lightweight championship in December in Las Vegas. After thrashing George Kambosos Jr. on June 5 in Melbourne, Australia, by unanimous decision, Haney (29-0, 15 KOs) has subsequently won all four belts, making that fight even more meaningful.

Diaz was the target of some criticism for his performance following the defeat to Haney. The perception of that encounter has changed since the two Haney-Kambosos contests, which have been scored a combined 21-3 in favor of the champion. In hindsight, Diaz's victory in four rounds on a single card, let alone three, was quite remarkable. 

William Zepeda (26-0, 23 KOs)

Fighting out of Mexico, Zepeda had a 15-fight knockout streak stop in May in Ontario, California when he won by decision in a 10-round fight over former 130-pound champion Rene Alvarado. The 26-year-old made his American debut in December 2020 in Hollywood, when he defeated Roberto Ramirez via knockout in the fifth round. Then, on July 9 at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles, he put on his greatest performance to date by stopping the previously unbeaten Hector Tanajara in the sixth round. It's worth noting,  Javier Fortuna, a previous secondary champion, was defeated by Diaz on the same night.

Zepeda has a powerful punch, which can occasionally eclipse his other skills throughout a match. Like Artur Beterbiev, he has won nearly every bout by knockout, yet frequently, people overlook or fail to see how skilled he is technically. Zepeda has a strong base and a jab that aids in preparing him for his powerful blows.
