The vacant WBO 130lb title will be on the line in Friday night's fight between Emanuel Navarrete and Liam Wilson, in Glendale, Arizona.
Navarrete, who has had a great run in recent years, has won titles at 122lbs and 126lbs (and still holds the 126lbs title). Will he maintain that momentum by winning another global championship, or can Australia's Wilson pull off a shock and take home the prize?
Emanuel Navarrete (36-1-0, 30 KOs)
Navarrete already holds victories across two divisions and the 28-year-old Mexican is currently attempting a third. When he takes on Wilson for the vacant WBO championship, he will make his professional debut at 130 pounds, giving him concurrent belts in the featherweight and junior lightweight weight classes.
With the 126-pound belt secured, he was able to compete for the 130-pound title following some administrative maneuvers within WBO. After the bout on Friday, the high-volume puncher allegedly won't decide what weight he'll compete at in the long run. Since he was defeated in his fifth professional contest in 2012, Navarrete hasn't had a defeat since and last competed in August of last year, defeating Eduardo Baez in six rounds.
As a former WBO junior featherweight and featherweight champion, "Vaquero" is no stranger to title contests. Because he has eliminated 82% of his opponents inside the distance, Navarrete is widely regarded as one of the top featherweights in the world.
Liam Wilson (11-1-0, 7 KOs)
Wilson is stepping up his opposition significantly for this bout, just as the odds suggest. The relatively unknown Australian, with only 12 professional fights under his belt, has never competed outside his home nation.
Since being defeated in five rounds by Filipino Joe Noynay in July 2021, the WBO's No. 3 contender has won two straight fights. Wilson, at 5-foot-9, is tall for the division, which could pose somewhat of a threat to Navarrete. Wilson is a competent boxer, but Navarrete is much better and far more tested
