Islam Makhachev vs. Alexander Volkanovski Odds: 57% of Bets on Makhachev to Beat Volkanovski

UFC 284, which will be broadcast live from Perth, Australia's RAC Arena on Saturday, February 11th, is just a few days away. MMA fans like myself can't wait. The big lightweight main event between Islam Makhachev (23-1) and Alexander Volkanovski (25-1) is drawing the most attention, despite the card's abundance of notable matches, including a great co-main.

Makhachev will compete against Volkanovski, the UFC Featherweight Champion, to defend his UFC Lightweight championship. If successful, Volkanovski would become just the fifth athlete in UFC history to hold two belts in different weight classes simultaneously. The stakes have never been higher for either fighter, as we take a closer look at both.

Islam Makhachev vs. Alexander Volkanovski Preview

Islam Makhachev (23-1-0)

Considering that Makhachev has won each of his last 11 fights, it's difficult not to favor him here. Additionally, he has defeated each of his previous five opponents, taking four by way of submission and one by way of first-round TKO.

In his most recent contest, Makhachev defeated Charles Oliveira by submission, winning the UFC Lightweight Championship in just two rounds. What's even more surprising is that Makhachev did easy work of Oliveira even though he was riding an 11-fight winning run at the time, receiving "performance of the night" awards in the process.

Alexander Volkanovski (25-1-0)

Volkanovski, however, is sure he can get the job done. The Australian fighter, 34, has won each of his previous 22 matches and has a 25-1 record in mixed martial arts. Since winning the featherweight title, he has successfully defended it four times.

Volkanovski prefers a slower pace of combat that pushes his opponents to their maximum as opposed to Makhachev, who goes for the finish. Volkanovski has won four unanimous decisions and one split decision in his last six fights, which have all gone the distance.

Volkanovski will have more momentum because of the boisterous Australian fans. If it is sufficient to overthrow Islam Makhachev, an unstoppable force, only time will tell.
