Yair Rodriguez vs. Josh Emmett Prediction
Yair Rodriguez
Despite Yair Rodriguez's repeated protests, he will be competing for an interim championship. Since Volkanovski has moved up to Lightweight, he has vacated the championship for the time being, making this a fight for (almost) all the marbles.
Some may question why Rodriguez is the favorite, at least by this number, despite his recent knockout victory against Brian Ortega. It was his first victory in three years, but his only defeat since 2018 came to Max Holloway.
One of the reasons he's favored is because he's expected to have the upper hand physically. At five inches taller, he also has an inch-and-a-half reach advantage. In addition to his 14-3 record, he has faced up against the division's elite on many occasions, which Emmett has not done. The fact that El Pantera is only 30 years old whereas Emmett is 37 is another glaring advantage to many.
Josh Emmett
Emmett has been undefeated in his last five bouts, making him a dangerous opponent in the Featherweight Division. We don't know if that's a huge compliment to him or if the division is simply a little weak right now. He has won by knockout over Michael Johnson and Mirsad Bektic, by unanimous decision against Shane Burgos and Dan Ige, and by split decision against Calvin Kattar in his most recent fight.
It's undeniable that Emmett is the more energized of the two fighters, but at 37 years old, he's hardly at his peak. Kattar is one of the most talented fighters he's ever encountered, yet he's lost three of the past four and four of the last seven. Even worse, many people believed Emmett should have lost his close decision. Despite not having faced a single opponent in the top five, Emmett is getting a crack at the championship.
