The final man to make the walk to the octagon at UFC 278 will be reigning, defending UFC Welterweight Champion of the world, Kamaru Usman. "The Nigerian Nightmare" will make his sixth title defense at the event, while Edwards will be getting his first opportunity at UFC gold.

Usman has one of, if not the best resumés in the history of the UFC's 170-pound division, perhaps only rivaled by UFC Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre. Usman has held an unblemished 15-0 run in the UFC, defeating the likes of the aforementioned Edwards in addition to Sean Strickland, Demian Maia, Rafael dos Anjos, Tyron Woodley, Jorge Masvidal (twice), Gilbert Burns, and most recently, Colby Covington, for the second time at UFC 268.

Before his dominating run, Usman was a contestant on the 21st season of The Ultimate Fighter and would win the competition, defeating Michael Graves, Steve Carl, and Hayder Hassan in the show's finale.

Standing across from Usman at UFC 278 will be the Jamaican-born contender, Leon Edwards. He signed with the UFC in 2014 following a successful 8-1 run on the UK's independent scene, where he was the former BAMMA Welterweight Champion.

However, it took Edwards a while to find his strive under the MMA leader's banner as Edwards held a modest 2-2 record to begin his UFC career, but after the aforementioned loss to Usman, Edwards has been unstoppable, boasting a 9-0 (1NC) record, including wins over the likes of Vicente Luque, Bryan Barberena, Donald Cerrone, Gunnar Nelson, Rafael dos Anjos, and most recently, fan-favorite Nate Diaz at UFC 263.

Edwards looks to take advantage of his first UFC title shot, something that's over eight years in the making.
