It was a long road for Strickland to become UFC champion, joining the UFC nearly 10 years ago and taking on the toughest middleweights in the sport in the time since. It all came together in 2023, however, picking up three straight wins, capping the year off with a dominant win over former champion Israel Adesanya. Being catapulted to superstar status in the process, Strickland’s personality only outweighs his ability in the octagon, as he is one of the most well-rounded fighters the promotion has to offer.

Dricus Du Plessis (20-2-0)
The road to a (potential) title was much shorter for Du Plessis in the UFC, joining in 2020 and rattling off six straight wins to get his first shot. They’ve all been impressive, however, with five coming inside the distance including a dismantling of Robert Whittaker in July. The win was his third straight inside of three rounds, and the only question mark for him coming into this fight is his gas tank, which has yet to be truly tested.

If Strickland can take Du Plessis into deeper waters in the form of the later rounds, I think he has a real shot in this one. Unfortunately for him, I see his aggressive style backfiring in this one, as Du Plessis gets him to the ground and keeps him there until a finish.
