After a trilogy against Israel Adesanya at middleweight, Pereira moved up to light heavyweight, first beating Jan Blachowicz at UFC 291 via split decision, before receiving his first shot at a belt. After handling Jiri Prochazka in the second round via TKO at UFC 295, Pereira claimed the light heavyweight strap which was vacant at the time.

Jamahal Hill (12-1-0)

The vacant belt that Pereira made his own, was idle because of Hill, who won the belt over Glover Teixeira, Pereira’s coach, just a year prior. In preparation for his first title defense, Hill tore his Achilles playing basketball, an injury he’s just now recovering from. Before the injury, Hill had gone 6-1 in the UFC on his way to the belt, as he looks to get it back Saturday night.
