Big 12 Championship Preview, Breakdown: An Early Look at Arizona State vs. Iowa State

A few weeks ago, the only people who thought Arizona State and Iowa State would make the College Football Playoff were probably Kenny Dillingham and Matt Campbell. Now, on the brink of the Big 12 Championship Game, we know that one of the two teams will be in the 12-team field come Saturday afternoon.

That's right, Saturday's Big 12 Championship will all but surely lock in the winner as a top-12 team, barring a major jump from Tulane. With so much on the line, it's important we take an early look at how these teams got here, what we can expect and who you should bet on in this Big 12 Championship preview.

Big 12 Championship Breakdown - Arizona State vs. Iowa State

Big 12 Championship Preview - Arizona State vs. Iowa State

It is a miracle that these two teams are playing in the Big 12 Championship Game at all.

Entering the season, Iowa State's odds of winning the conference were +900. Meanwhile, Arizona State had odds of +10000 with a win total of 4.5.

The Sun Devils have been one of the best stories in college football this season. Head coach Kenny Dillingham has done an outstanding job leading this team. Dillingham is one of the youngest coaches in College Football at 34 years old. With a win on Saturday, Dillingham and the Sun Devils will be in the College Football Playoffs.

The loser of this game will be eliminated from the playoffs.

Arizona State has a record of 10-2 and has been one of the hottest teams in the country lately. That record has the Sun Devils ranked 15th in the nation.

Most recently, Arizona State took care of business on the road against Arizona, winning 49-7 on Saturday.

Freshman Sam Levaitt leads the team with 2,444 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Senior Cam Skatebbo has rushed for 1,398 yards and seven touchdowns. Allen Texas native Jordyn Tyson has racked up a team-leading 1,101 receiving yards.

Like Arizona State, Iowa State was not expected to be in this position when the season began.

Head coach Matt Campbell has done as well of a job as anyone in college football this season. Campbell is confident his team will be ready for the moment today. Iowa State has never won a Conference Championship.

The Cyclones got some help two weekends ago when Kansas upset Colorado and opened the door for the Cyclones.

Iowa State took care of its business to earn an opportunity to reach the College Football Playoffs.

Former Big 12 Freshman of the Year Rocco Becht leads the team with 3,021 yards, 20 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Carson Hansen leads the ground game with 618 yards and eleven touchdowns. Jayden Higgins has been one of the best wide receivers in the conference. Higgins leads the team with 1,068 receiving yards.

Arizona State is a two-point favorite and the total for this contest is 50.5
