Philadelphia Eagles vs. San Francisco 49ers Preview
To call the Philadelphia Eagles a disappointment three games into the season would be an understatement. Losses to the Rams and Washington Football Team proceeded a tie to 2019’s worst team in the NFL in Week 3, the Cincinnati Bengals.
This weekend, the Eagles are taking their talents to primetime, traveling to San Francisco to face off against the 2-1 49ers. Is this the week the Eagles get their first win?
The Eagles’ success and failure starts and ends with their quarterback. Last season, Carson Wentz carried a group of practice-squad receivers to the playoffs behind an unbeaten tear to end the season.
This year, Wentz has been atrocious. The former No. 2 overall pick has three touchdowns and six interceptions. He is 30th in the NFL in QBR and looks like a shell of his former MVP-caliber self.
In his defense, the team is dealing with injuries up and down the roster, as they seem to every year, but Wentz has done himself no favors.
The key to this game, and every Eagles game this season, is Wentz. If he can stop forcing throws and trying to make too much happen, the team should be able to see sustained success against San Francisco and have a shot at an upset win. If he plays the way he did through the first three weeks, it could get ugly, fast.
San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco, like the Eagles, is dealing with a litany of injuries. The good news is, they will likely have Pro-Bowl tight end George Kittle back in the lineup. The bad news is they’re still without Raheem Mostert, Jordan Reed and starting QB Jimmy Garoppolo.
Last season’s NFC champs, the 49ers are 2-1 against the spread in 2020, covering by an average of 8.7 points each week. Their lone loss came in Week 1 to division rival Arizona. They defeated the New York Giants last week, 36-9.
It depends how Nick Mullens performs as a starting QB this week, but this looks like a game the 49ers should handle with relative ease.
Philadelphia Eagles vs. San Francisco 49ers Betting Breakdown
