In amongst some big news about positive Covid-19 tests there has been another huge story in the NFL today. The Washington Football Team's Dwayne Haskins has been benched after a very poor start to his second season.
The main headline is that Kyle Allen, who worked under Head Coach Ron Rivera, has been named the starter. What may have gone under the radar however is that Haskins hasn't been relegated to the second string, he's now third on the depth chart.
Alex Smith has taken the second position in the depth chart, meaning he is now only an injury to Kyle Allen, or a bad performance away, from getting back onto the field for the Washington Football Team.
It's been a long road back to the field for Alex Smith after that gruesome compound leg fracture in November 2018. ESPN's Project 11 documented his journey, which impacted the betting markets when it was released in May of this year.
Alex Smith is as short as +400 to win the award with one bookie but +1400 with another. Since the news has broken about Haskins demotion we've seen 98.45% of bets on the Comeback Player Of The Year market have been on Alex Smith. It also seems likely that these odds may shorten as the weekend gets closer, and they'll certainly shorten if Smith gets back on the field this Sunday.
