Rumors about a potential Russell Wilson trade have been swirling for nearly a month now. It all started when Jason LaConfora of CBS Sports reported that Wilson’s camp had begun talking about a trade. Wilson only made things worse when he went out and voiced his frustrations with the team’s offensive line publicly.

Despite that, many didn’t believe that Wilson was truly available. That all changed Thursday morning when a report from Michael-Shawn Dugar, Mike Sando, and Jayson Jenks of The Athletic reported that there was a growing rift between the Seahawks and Russell Wilson.

Rumors of a trade became more serious, as team names were thrown into the picture. Adam Schefter of ESPN shined even more light on the trade rumors later in the day, reporting that Wilson has not demanded a trade but would accept a trade to either the Chicago Bears, Las Vegas Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, or New Orleans Saints.

It seems sportsbooks were ahead of this one. FanDuel had the Dallas Cowboys and Las Vegas Raiders as the favorites to land Wilson as far back as February 16th. They gave the Raiders +250 and the Dallas Cowboys at +340.

Those odds are pretty shocking considering the Raiders and Cowboys both have starting quarterbacks. The Raiders have rolled with Derek Carr at quarterback since drafting him in the second round in 2014. Carr has put up three straight 4,000 yard seasons and improved in each one. This past year he had 27 TDs to 9 INTs. His 71 QBR was by far the highest mark of his career.

Would Russell Wilson be an upgrade? Absolutely. Is he enough of an upgrade for the Raiders to pay what’s assuredly going to be an astronomical price? That doesn’t seem like Jon Gruden’s style.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys have Dak Prescott. Prescott’s contract is technically up once the new league year starts, but indications had been they plan on using the franchise tag on Dak for the second straight year.

Prescott has been phenomenal the last two years. In 2019, Prescott threw for over 4,900 yards, 30 TDs, and 11 INTs. He cemented his status as one of the 10 best quarterbacks in the NFL. He was even better in 2020, as he was on pace for over 5,900 yards, 29 TDs, and 13 INTs before a horrific ankle injury ended his season.

Could the Cowboys move on from Dak and the uncertainty that comes with his injury? It’s possible, but not likely. Prescott is significantly younger than Wilson, and if he returns to form he offers similar production without having to give up multiple high draft picks.

Still, Russell Wilson was the favorite to win the MVP award over the first half of the 2020 season. It’s easy to make an argument why any team should trade him.
