When the San Francisco 49ers traded with the Miami Dolphins to secure the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft it shocked football. Now the dust have settled, there's not much we know for sure, except that Jimmy Garoppolo's time as the Niners starting QB has likely come to an end.
Will the 49ers draft Mac Jones?
It was a shock when the 49ers top brass decided to go they'd watch Mac Jones throw at his pro day on Tuesday, over Justin Fields and it's led to increased speculation that Mac Jones will be headed to San Francisco third overall. It's believed that John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan will be watching Jones, with a small delegation led by assistant GM Adam Peters will watch Justin Fields in Columbus.
It was only a week ago that the over/under on where Jones would be selected was 18.5 but he's shortened hugely in recent days and now DraftKings have put him as the player most likely to be drafted third overall at @ +125, implying a 44.4% chance that they take the former Alabama signal caller there.
Mac Jones put up impressive numbers last season but many questions have been raised over how he'd fit into the pro game. He was ranked 1st in the nation against the blitz per PFF and some experts believe him to be more pro-ready than some of his rivals. His arm strength is good but not hugely impressive, likewise many believe that the talent around him has boosted his numbers.
Who will draft Justin Fields?
Justin Fields came in to 2021 as the liekly second overall pick but in the months following the season we've seen his draft stock fall dramatically, with Zach Wilson overtaking him and even Trey Lance and Mac Jones leapfrogging him.
There are a number of reasons why Fields might be falling but it's a surprise to see given his outstanding season and production at collegiate level.
DraftKings believe that he's +175 to be taken third overall, level with Trey Lance and behind Mac Jones.
The expected first and second picks across all bookmakers is Trevor Lawrence followed by Zach Wilson. There's every chance that the new Mac Jones news is a smokescreen but we'll see what happens, but for now he's the bookies favorite to go third overall.
