NCAA Football Week 6 Matchup: Stanford vs. Arizona State
Stanford looks to back up its big upset over No.3 Oregon Ducks this Saturday when it squares up to a second-straight ranked opponent, No.22 Arizona State, in as many weeks.
No.22 Arizona State was reinstated inside the Top 25 of the Associated Press college football poll this week after serving up an upset over UCLA in Pasadena Saturday night. Now, they’ll be keen to keep the momentum going at the expense of Pac-12 foes, Stanford, when the pair collides at Sun Devil Stadium.
Books opened Stanford vs. Arizona State odds with the Cardinal catching 9.5-points on the board, but the line jumped up to 10 points Sunday. The game total opened at 52 points.
Stanford Cardinal Odds & Overview
Stanford Cardinal delivered arguably the biggest upsets of the weekend, defeating one of the top College Football Playoff contenders with a 31-24 come-from-behind victory in overtime against the No.3 Oregon Ducks. Stanford closed as the 8.5-point home underdogs, and came through for their backers in the stunning victory.
Cardinal sophomore quarterback Tanner McKee rallied his side late in the fourth quarter to knot the game at 24-24. He reeled off 11 plays for 87 yards on the final drive, capping it off with a two-yard toss to Elijah Higgins for the touchdown. In overtime, McKee, once again, rose to the occasion by converting a third-and-long pass, connecting with John Humphreys for the game-winning touchdown.
Head coach David Shaw was elated by his side’s performance, the grit and determination displayed in the fight for the victory. In particular, he was most effusive about McKee’s clutch play towards the end. “Can't say enough about our young quarterback,” gushed Shaw in his post-game presser. Adding that McKee “did not play perfectly, did not play his best game, but doggone it, he is special. He is special.”
Arizona State Odds & Overview
Arizona State snapped a two-game losing streak to UCLA on Saturday, clinching the impressive 42-23 win as the 3-point closing underdogs on the road. On the heels of the victory, Arizona State jumped back inside the AP Top 25 at No.22 and climbed to the top spot in Pac-12.
Herm Edwards' side started the season as the No.25 ranked team, but a loss to BYU a couple of weeks ago dropped them outside the frame. So, that UCLA win was validating, getting Arizona State back into the conversation.
The Sun Devils beat the Bruins resoundingly, totting up 458 yards of offense and averaging nine yards per play. Arizona State's defense was astounding, shutting down UCLA in the second half, while the offense put in a strong performance, led by junior quarterback Jayden Daniels.
The Sun Devils led 24-23 at the half and scored 18 unanswered points in the second half. Daniels threw for 286 yards on 13-of-18 passing for two touchdowns, twice connecting with wide receiver Ricky Pearsall in the second quarter for the score. The junior signal-caller added another 45 yards on the ground.
