Seattle Seahawks vs. Los Angeles Rams Preview

One of the best football rivalries is on the cards this Thursday as the Los Angeles Rams and the Seattle Seahawks kick off Week 5 of the NFL season. The Rams are coming off a bruising loss to the Arizona Cardinals, their first defeat of the season, while the Seahawks rebounded with a pivotal victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

For a second straight week, the Rams and Seahawks square up to division opponents, and the stakes couldn't be any higher for these two potential playoffs hopefuls.

The Rams' loss to the Cardinals ceded the top spot to the Arizona Cardinals. Another loss would be detrimental for Sean McVay's side. Not to mention the bonhomie they enjoyed after getting off to a fast start with Matthew Stafford as the newly-minted signal-caller would start to wane thin on the back of a two-game losing steak to division rivals.

The Seahawks' win over the Niners put them back in the NFC West race. Another win would see them level the Rams in the table and, at the same time, close the gap on Arizona. But, of course, that's exactly where the reigning NFC West champions want to be right now.

So, what do the oddsmakers think? Well, if opening indications were a sign of what's to come, the balance tips in favor of the McVay's highly-fancied Rams. Books opened with Rams -1 on Sunday, but the line quickly jumped out to Rams -2.5 as the betting poured in. Some books are already showing Rams -3, which is quite the leap from Sunday's offering.

Los Angeles Rams Odds & Overview

The Rams looked unstoppable at the start of the season after securing early victories over the Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They were flying high in the NFC West with a 3-0 record and a 2-1-0 record against the spread. The only hiccup in the betting came when the Rams failed to cover as the 4-point closing road favorites in the 27-24 win over the Colts. However, they were also in a good position after beating Tampa Bay in the wider NFC standings.

All of that came crashing down in Week 4 on the heels of a surprisingly one-sided defeat to the Arizona Cardinals at SoFi Stadium. The Rams closed as the 3.5-point home chalk but succumbed to the 37-20 upset.

Matthew Stafford conjured memories of his former self, circa Detroit Lions days. He was out of sync with the offense and off his game entirely. The Cardinals' defense, anchored by J.J. Watt and Chandler Jones, is formidable, but the Rams' secondary protected Stafford well against their threat. As a result, he was in little danger, and he had plenty of time in the pocket for the most part. So, the onus for the errant throws, the miscues, the underthrown and overthrown passes come down to ultimately to Stafford. But, perhaps, it was just a bad day in the office. He went 26-of-41 for 280 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

It's safe to say that it wasn't a great day in the office for the Rams defense either, as they allowed the most points in over a year. In addition, the 37 points the Rams conceded exceeded the points allowed in any game in 2020.

Seattle Seahawks Odds & Overview

The Seahawks needed a rebound performance badly after dropping back-to-back games to the Titans and Vikings. Seattle was in command against Tennessee until the Titans rallied to seize the come-from-behind 33-30 win. The next game was an unmitigated disaster from start to finish as the Seahawks simply failed to show up in Minnesota and succumbed to the 30-17 loss.

Last Sunday's clash against the San Francisco 49ers was a must-win game for Russell Wilson and Company. They were 1-2 on the season and propping up the NFC West division. Another loss would have opened a huge gap between the Seahawks and the division leaders, and that could have been detrimental in the wider spectrum of the season and their playoff ambitions.

All told, the Seahawks delivered the 28-21 upset over the Niners at Levi Stadium and improved to a 2-2 record on the season. They had some help when Jimmy Garoppolo exited the game with an injury, and rookie quarterback Trey Lance stepped in. Lance played well, but it was his first-ever experience of an NFL game with the weight of expectation solely on his shoulders.

Books went to press with Los Angeles -1, but the line jumped up to -2.5 across the NFL odds board with most market operators as the public bet up the Rams. As things currently stand, the Rams are taking more than 60 percent of early bets.

The total is currently trading at 54.5 points, up by a point from an opening on 53.5 points. According to consensus betting reports, the betting is almost split down the middle, but the over is getting slightly more action (55% to 45%).

Los Angeles Rams vs. Seattle Seahawks Betting Preview and Prediction

Divisional rivalries tend to favor the home team, but that went out of the window last weekend. The Arizona Cardinals and the Seattle Seahawks emerged winners on the road in their respective NFC West contests.

This week, the Seahawks will hope that the old adage is true as they welcome the Rams to Lumen Field. However, given the history between these two outfits in recent years, nothing is a given. The Seahawks won the final game of the 2020 regular season over the Rams to clinch the NFC West title, but the Rams upset the Seahawks in the wildcard round a week later at Lumen Field.

This game is a total tossup for NFL picks in more ways than one, and it could very well come down to the quarterback that has the ball last. That said, the Seahawks, catching almost a field goal at home for a primetime football showdown against a division rival, might just be the value NFL pick.
