Indianapolis Colts Preview
The Colts managed to put a heart-breaking Week 5 loss to the Baltimore Ravens behind them last week. Indianapolis earned a resounding 31-3 win over the lowly AFC South Division rival Houston Texans. While the Colts are still two games below .500 and continue to trail the Tennessee Titans in the division races by the same difference, a favorable schedule over the next few weeks provides optimism. Carson Wentz appears to be settling in nicely with his new team. After a whale of a game against Baltimore, Wentz threw two more TD passes in last Sunday’s win. After a slow start to the season, lead running back Jonathan Taylor has also been very impressive the last three weeks. He gashed the Houston defense for 145 yards and two scores last week.
On the downside, just when it looked like the Colts’ wide receiver corps was getting healthy, more injuries struck. T.Y. Hilton led the team with 80 yards in his season debut last week before exiting with a new quad injury. Parris Campbell is also back on the IR with a foot injury after back-to-back solid performances. Indianapolis will be counting on Michael Pittman Jr. to step up once again in Sunday’s NFL betting matchup. While the Colts have the top adjusted run defense in the NFL through six weeks, their secondary has not played well. Safeties Julian Blackmon and Andrew Sendejo are both dealing with injuries ahead of Sunday night’s game.
San Francisco 49ers Preview
Last week marked the start of byes across the NFL. While most teams probably wouldn’t prefer to have their bye so early in the season, it actually came at a good time for the injury-marred 49ers. Most importantly, it gave quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo an extra week to heal up after he left the team’s Week 4 contest with a calf injury. Rookie Trey Lance struggled to finish off drives in the team’s Week 5 loss to the division rival Arizona Cardinals. After starting the week out as a limited practice participant, expect Garoppolo to be back under center for San Francisco on Sunday.
While the bye week certainly helped the Niners get healthy overall, it will be important for bettors to monitor the status of star tackle Trent Williams ahead of Sunday’s contest. Of course, tight end George Kittle definitely won’t be available after landing on IR prior to the bye. That said, wideouts Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk are plenty capable of exploiting the vulnerable Indianapolis secondary. It is interesting to see the 49ers laying a full four points despite entering the game on a three-game losing streak. With a 1-4 record ATS on the year, this NFL betting matchup looms large in either disproving or justifying the consensus power ratings of this team.
Colts vs. 49ers Betting Odds and Line Movement
The following table displays the best Colts vs 49ers NFL betting odds and lines available in the market.
Team | Moneyline | ML Implied Win Probability | Spread | Total |
---|---|---|---|---|
Colts | +184 | 35.2% | +4 (-105) | O 44 (-110) |
49ers | -200 | 66.7% | -4 (-110) | U 44 (-105) |
While the 49ers are home favorites and come in fresh off a bye, the line moves have favored the visiting Colts so far. Oddsmakers opened San Francisco at -5.5 on the lookahead. Indy has taken enough sharp money to see the number shift down to an even four-point spread. Meanwhile, the total has held steady, dropping just a half-point after opening at 44.5.
When it comes to public betting percentages, this Sunday night matchup has one of the most evenly split ticket counts of the week. At the time of writing, both teams had attracted 50% of bets ATS. In theory, this makes the line move in the Colts’ favor worth noting.
Colts vs. 49ers Betting Picks and Prediction
Like most NFL betting analysts, I’ll fully admit that there are several positives for both sides in this Colts vs 49ers matchup. Trusting one team over the other right now is difficult to do. While the Niners should be healthier after a week off, the Colts have played well in each of the last three weeks. If not for Lamar Jackson going full video game in the fourth quarter of their Week 5 contest, Indy might very well be entering this primetime game on a three-game winning streak. In terms of a side, lean towards taking the points with the Colts.
While it’s difficult to feel confident in a bet against the spread here, this total actually is surprisingly low. Carson Wentz has been sharp of late for the Colts, while a healthy Jimmy Garoppolo instantly upgrades the 49ers’ passing attack. Neither team’s defensive secondary has played well thus far. Both have dealt with injuries as well and continue to do so coming into this game. The two teams should have little trouble pushing the total over 44.
Colts vs 49ers NFL Betting Picks: Over 44 (-110)
