New York Jets Preview
Most people had no idea who Mike White was before this past Sunday. The entire NFL betting world does now. The former fifth-round draft pick out of Western Kentucky showed out in his first career start last Sunday. Not only did White and the Jets shock the AFC-leading Cincinnati Bengals, but he also led the league in passing yards on the week. Shoutout to the Jets fan in attendance who actually threw money down on White to do just that at 100-1 odds! It was truly a fairy tale first start for the 26-year-old. While he did throw two interceptions, he more than overcame them by passing for 405 yards and three scores. White even caught the two-point conversion following what proved to be the winning score for New York.
Whether or not the Jets can replicate Sunday’s success on the road with a short week of preparation remains to be seen. The running back tandem of Michael Carter and Ty Johnson has been heavily featured in the offensive game plan for New York each of the last two weeks. The two combined for over 90 yards rushing and also pulled in 14 combined catches for over 160 yards against Cincinnati. Each found the end zone once. Their pass-catching abilities will be needed if they are to be effective against a sturdy Colts’ defensive front. Speaking of defense, a steady pass rush has been key for the Jets in both of their victories. With both C.J. Mosley and Marcus Maye back healthy, perhaps New York can dial some things up again on Thursday night.
Indianapolis Colts Preview
The Colts suffered a crushing overtime loss to the AFC South Division rival Tennessee Titans last Sunday. As a result, a three-game deficit in the division standings is actually four since the Titans swept both head-to-head meetings between the teams. Carson Wentz made some very costly mistakes in a big spot yet again. The Colts lost the turnover battle on Sunday 3-2 and would have won the game if not for a Wentz interception down in the red zone. It certainly didn’t help that wideout T.Y. Hilton exited Sunday’s game with yet another injury. Given the fragility of neck injuries, Indianapolis might very well be without Hilton for the foreseeable future.
With Hilton going down, the Colts had to finish out their Week 8 NFL betting matchup with just four healthy wide receivers. Michael Pittman stepped up huge with 10 receptions for 86 yards and two scores. Expect Zach Pascal, tight end Mo-Alie Cox and running back Nyheim Hines to assume larger roles in the passing game for the Colts on Thursday night. Of course, Indianapolis would prefer to grind things out on the ground with Jonathan Taylor if possible. Defensively, Indy ranks first in the league in adjusted efficiency against the run. Given that the Colts should have a decisive advantage at the line of scrimmage when on defense, containing the Jets’ backfield duo in the passing game will be critical.
Jets vs. Colts Betting Odds and Line Movement
The following table displays the best Jets vs Colts NFL betting odds and lines available in the market.
Team | Moneyline | ML Implied Win Probability | Spread | Total |
---|---|---|---|---|
Jets | +600 | 14.3% | +10.5 (-107) | O 46.5 (-108) |
Colts | -490 | 83.1% | -10.5 (-105) | U 46.5 (-110) |
Following the respective Week 8 results for the Jets and Colts, the spread for this TNF matchup shrunk a full four points. Oddsmakers had originally opened Indianapolis north of a two-touchdown favorite. The line of -14.5 has shifted down to -10.5 after the Jets’ improbable Week 8 victory.
After Mike White’s impressive performance and the best game of the year for New York offensively on Sunday, we have also seen the NFL betting total move up ahead of Thursday’s matchup. An opening over/under of 44 has since moved up to 46.5. Even though the two teams are separated by a single game in the AFC standings, the odds still give the Colts an 83% chance to win this TNF contest.
Jets vs. Colts Betting Picks and Prediction
If Mike White can replicate his Week 8 performance even a little bit, the Jets should be able to hang around in this NFL betting matchup. New York is healthier coming in and has a defensive front capable of throwing Carson Wentz and the Colts offense out of rhythm. While New York’s secondary is extremely young and inexperienced, they will get a slight reprieve on Thursday considering all of the injuries the Colts have at wide receiver.
On paper, the defensive fronts for both teams have the potential to impact this game in a big way. With the Colts focused on running the ball, it’s difficult to envision them piling up points at will on Thursday. The Jets will struggle to run against an Indianapolis defense that has held quality running backs in check this season. If top receiver Corey Davis is once again ruled out, White will be up against it to make plays through the air. The Jets have also struggled mightily on the road, scoring just 17 points in their three true road games to date. The NFL betting total was rightfully adjusted after what we saw in Week 8. However, a thorough handicap suggests that the opening number was probably more reasonable.
Jets vs Colts NFL Betting Picks: Under 46.5 (-110)
