Broncos vs. Cowboys NFL Week 9 Expert Betting Odds, Picks, and Preview

Among the early games on this Week 9 NFL Sunday is an intra-conference battle between the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys. Both teams enter this matchup coming off of wins this past week. However, one could certainly make the case that the home side has been much more impressive through the first eight weeks of the season. The NFL betting odds reflect this sentiment, with the point spread nearly reaching double-digits for this Broncos vs Cowboys matchup.

Broncos vs. Cowboys odds

Denver Broncos Preview

The Broncos may have emerged victorious last week, but it was far from an inspiring performance offensively. It would not be a surprise to see Teddy Bridgewater benched in favor of Drew Lock at any point during the second half of the season. Despite swaths of game-changing talent at the skill positions, Denver’s offense continues to sputter with Bridgewater at the helm. They amassed just 273 total yards in Week 8 against a Washington Football Team defense that has been one of the worst in football, particularly against the pass. Much of the offensive production continues to flow through the RB tandem of Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams. The former scored a pair of touchdowns in last week’s win.

If the Broncos are to cover this NFL betting spread as large road underdogs, the defense will have to step up. Sunday’s effort was much better than what we saw from Vic Fangio’s unit two weeks ago against an undermanned Cleveland Browns team. However, the Broncos traded away star linebacker Von Miller prior to the NFL trade deadline. Knowing that they will not have one of their top contributors returning puts the onus on other defensive stalwarts to step up. Safety Justin Simmons had a whale of a game last week, finishing with two interceptions. Even without Miller, the Broncos still managed five total sacks for the game.

Dallas Cowboys Preview

Incredibly, the Cowboys remain perfect against the NFL betting spread entering this Sunday’s home tilt. Dallas is now 7-0 against the number after lines shifted heavily against them in last week’s primetime game at the Minnesota Vikings. Without QB Dak Prescott, the Cowboys still found a way to win outright. Cooper Rush didn’t exactly get a ton of help from the Cowboys’ rushing attack against the Vikings either. Ezekiel Elliott was held to just 50 yards on 16 carries. Wideouts Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb carved up an overmatched Minnesota secondary. Each finished with over 100 yards receiving. Cedrick Wilson also had 84 yards and a score. So much for the Cowboys not having a competent backup quarterback!

All signs point towards Prescott taking back the reins in this week’s NFL betting matchup. While this bodes well for the offense, the Cowboys’ defense continues to be extremely impressive. After shutting down Minnesota, Dallas now ranks sixth in overall adjusted efficiency. Coordinator Dan Quinn has done a phenomenal job of turning around what was one of the league’s worst defenses a season ago. While Trevon Diggs’ interception streak may have ended last week, he remains a front-runner to win defensive player of the year. With the strength of the Cowboys’ D being the front seven, they should match up very well against the conservative Denver offense.

Broncos vs. Cowboys Betting Odds and Line Movement

The following table displays the best Broncos vs Cowboys NFL betting odds and lines available in the market.

Broncos vs. Cowboys odds

After originally opening this game with the Cowboys favored at -7.5, the betting market has moved towards Dallas exclusively. The spread is growing dangerously close to reaching double-digits. The total has remained fairly stable. The current over/under of 49.5 is just a half-point higher than the initial line. Despite both teams being in the thick of the playoff chase, oddsmakers give the Cowboys over an 80% chance to win their seventh consecutive game on Sunday.

Broncos vs. Cowboys Betting Picks and Prediction

While the defensive effort from the Broncos was encouraging last week, they figure to have a much tougher time slowing down a Dallas offense that is clicking on all cylinders. If Dak Prescott is indeed back under center on Sunday, that task becomes even more difficult. Meanwhile, Denver has done nothing to show that they are headed in the right direction offensively. Even back at the beginning of the year when the team started out 3-0, they weren’t exactly piling up points in bunches.

Assuming the Broncos’ defense rises to the occasion in an effort to at least keep the Broncos competitive, look to play this game under the total. Denver might very well struggle to score more than 14 points against a Cowboys defense that might be even better than most NFL betting analysts suggest.
