NFL Rumors: Cam Newton to Meet With Carolina Panthers
Sequels aren’t always the best thing, but when it comes to the Carolina Panthers they may not have a choice. Carolina heard the news that starting quarterback, Sam Darnold will miss four to six weeks due to a shoulder injury and currently have PJ Walker as their backup. It’s safe to say they could use help at the position.
Enter former friend and current free agent, Cam Newton.
Cam Newton started 15 games for the New England Patriots last season, going 7-8 as the starter. He threw for just 2,657 yards (177.1 yards per game) eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He was initially supposed to be in a quarterback competition with Mac Jones in New England to start the year in 2021 but Bill Belichick decided to move on from the veteran.
The former first overall pick in the 2011 draft spent the first nine years of his NFL career in Carolina where he went 68-55-1, appeared in the playoffs four times, and even won the NFL MVP in the 2015 season as the Panthers went 15-1 and appeared in the Super Bowl.
Yes, now at 32-years-old and with some more mileage on him, it’ll likely be a challenge for him to look like his former self. But the Carolina Panthers are desperate, plus even over the last few weeks Darnold really struggled throwing 10 interceptions in the last six games.
Will Matt Rhule and Cam Newton make nice and join forces now? It’s likely the best opportunity for both parties here, I think they should.
