Denver Broncos Preview

The Broncos have been one of the most difficult teams for bettors to figure out this season. After losing in ugly fashion to the Philadelphia Eagles prior to a Week 11 bye, Denver emerged from their open date and knocked off the Los Angeles Chargers last Sunday as home underdogs. Not only did that go in the books as an NFL betting upset, but the win gave the Broncos a major boost in the AFC West standings. Toppling the Chiefs this weekend would vault them into a first-place tie.

Making the 15-point win over the Chargers last week all the more difficult to explain was the fact that quarterback Teddy Bridgewater finished with just 129 yards passing. The Broncos were outgained and also lost the time of possession battle by a slim margin. The defense did play much better than it had been prior to the bye week though. Particular improvement was evident against the run as Denver gave up just 72 yards rushing to all L.A. ball-carriers combined. Offensively, it was the Broncos’ own RB tandem of Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams carrying the load. Despite an even split in terms of carries, both players continue to be productive on a weekly basis. That said, Gordon is doubtful to play on Sunday night due to an injury suffered during last week’s game.

Kansas City Chiefs Preview

The Chiefs will have a rest advantage in Sunday’s NFL betting clash as they enter off a Week 12 bye. That alone is bad news for the Broncos considering the well-documented success of Andy Reid following a bye week. In 22 years as an NFL head coach, Reid’s teams have gone 19-3 straight up after a bye in the regular season. Kansas City’s current coach-quarterback pairing of Reid and Patrick Mahomes is 7-1 off a bye together. Such a lopsided NFL betting trend is certainly one to note ahead of this SNF matchup.

Of course, the Broncos have plenty more to be concerned about than Reid’s post-bye week success. On the field, the Chiefs rolled into their off week by winning four straight and five of six overall after a 2-3 start to the season. The winning streak vaulted them into sole possession of first place in the AFC West Division. While Mahomes and the offense still appear to have some adjustments to make, the primary tweaks have clearly already been made on the defensive side of the ball. Steve Spagnuolo has completely rejuvenated a Kansas City defense that started the year on pace to be one of the worst in NFL history. The Chiefs flipped the script during the strong six-game stretch prior to the bye. Five opponents were held to 17 points or less during that span.

After getting bumped up to a 10-point spread earlier in the week, the NFL betting market has since bought the line back down to the opening mark of Chiefs -9.5. Bettors should carefully note that the Broncos are a heavily-backed public underdog ahead of this game. Perhaps the failure of Kansas City to cover many point spreads dating back to last season is part of the motivation behind 69% of public bettors taking the Broncos plus the points.

It is interesting to note that the total has dropped for this SNF matchup. Despite the spread nearly being double-digits, sharp bettors seem to be expecting the defenses to hold their own. The opening number of 47.5 has been bet all the way down to 45.

Chiefs vs. Broncos Betting Picks and Prediction

While the Broncos may have been able to defy the NFL betting odds last week, it won’t be easy to take down two quality divisional opponents in back-to-back weeks. Given how well the Chiefs’ defense was playing ahead of the bye, it’s really difficult to envision Teddy Bridgewater getting much of anything done offensively. A spirited effort by the Broncos’ D will be required to keep them competitive.

Despite the success of Andy Reid following a bye week, this season has largely been uncharted territory as far as the offensive struggles. Aside from a 40-point effort three weeks ago in primetime against Las Vegas, Patrick Mahomes and Co. have sputtered. Vic Fangio may not be a great head coach, but he does know how to prepare a defensive game plan. With the Broncos set to get linebacker Bradley Chubb back, they should be able to make life difficult for Mahomes. Look to follow the early line move and play under the total.

Chiefs vs. Broncos NFL Betting Picks: Under 47 (-105)
