Minnesota Vikings Fire Head Coach Mike Zimmer After Eight Years

It was a good run, but it's the end of the road for Mike Zimmer. Zimmer was let go after spending the last eight seasons as Head Coach of the Minnesota Vikings. During his tenure, he made the playoffs three times and had a 2-3 record in the postseason before finishing under .500 in his final two years as coach of the Vikings. His head coaching career in Minnesota ends with a 72-56-1 record.

One of his calling cards, after spending 14 years as a defensive coordinator in this league, was his defenses. Initially, his Vikings defenses were phenomenal as they finished in the top 10 three times during his tenure. That stopped being the case the last two years.

He ended up finishing with the 31st defense this year and 27th last year in terms of yards over his final two seasons. With his experience, one could make the case that he could be a defensive coordinator option for a young first-time head coach.

The Vikings will be tasked with a tough decision. Do you stick it out with Kirk Cousins going forward, do you try to rebuild? Well, it's not an easy decision but with the weapons on offense it could certainly be an interesting job for an up-and-coming offensive mind. Perhaps finally Eric Bieniemy gets his shot?
