Saints 2022 Starting Quarterback Odds: Could Jameis Winston Sign an Extension?
Things are likely about to get turbulent for a Saints team that was already reeling from the loss of franchise quarterback Drew Brees, who now will be without franchise coach Sean Payton. While it’s still unclear who will fill both positions, I have a hunch who might at least be under center.

Jameis Winston (+550)
Despite playing just seven games this season for the Saints before a season-ending injury, Winston still led the team in yards, touchdowns, and average yards per catch, and should he have remained healthy the Saints were almost certainly a playoff team. Now, he enters this offseason without a new deal and without the coach that put him in that QB1 spot.
While in most years Winston would likely be the #1 free agent QB in the market, he’s now competing with the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and Jimmy G, all of whom are expected to be on the move this offseason. Additionally, by all accounts, his rehab has gone to plan and he will be ready to go come offseason workouts and 100% by September.
In regards to the Saints' outlook for next season should they have an adequate quarterback, as Winston has proven to be, the pieces are there. Going 9-8 this season and only narrowly missing the postseason, the Saints boasted one of the best defenses in the league allowing just 19.7 points per game. That was not just good enough for #1 in the NFC, but #4 in the league trailing only the Bills, Patriots, and Broncos.
As far as the draft goes, the Saints hold the #18 pick which will likely be just outside the reach of the top two quarterbacks available in Kenny Pickett and Matt Corral.
With a guy in their ranks who's clearly a starter in this league and a roster behind him that could take this team to the playoffs, I expect the investment to be there. While it will take some rework of the finances involved, don't be surprised for Winston to sign a big extension in the coming months.
