Kyle Trask Favored Start for Buccaneers in Week 1 Following Tom Brady's Retirement

With Tom Brady officially retired the Tampa Bay Buccaneers must focus on how they can continue their recent run of success. With nearly half their starters set to hit free agency this year, the team may not be able to afford a new QB. So, oddsmakers believe that young Kyle Trask will be tasked with captaining the ship.

Trask is currently given +400 odds, or an implied 20% chance to be the team’s Week 1 starter. If they do make a move at quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo is the favorite at +450 or an implied 18.2%. Oddsmakers don’t believe that the Bucs will consider drafting another QB, there are 18 quarterbacks on the odds market and 0 are in the upcoming draft.

Buccaneers Starting QB

Oddsmakers aren’t limiting themselves to available quarterbacks though. Colts starter Carson Wentz is given +550 odds, or an implied 15.4% chance to be the Bucs Week 1 starter. Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is given +950 odds, or an implied 9.5% chance. There’s even starters that seem locked in like Kirk Cousins at +1600 and Ryan Tannehill at +2200.

The most notable though may be the returns. First, Jameis Winston is given +1400 odds to reclaim the job that was once his. What about some quarterbacks coming out of retirement? Andrew Luck and Phillip Rivers are both given +5000 odds to claim the job.

The Bucs are in a really tough spot this offseason. They want to keep competing, but they only have about 19 mil in cap space if they process Brady’s retirement after June 1st. With half of their starters set to it the open market it’s hard to see how they can afford to add someone like Jimmy Garoppolo who would cost 25.55 mil against the cap by himself. If the team wants to keep their core together their only option may be to hand the keys to Kyle Trask. That’s what oddsmakers are looking at when they think he’s the favorite.
