Lamar Jackson Baltimore Ravens Roll Out

2022 NFL MVP Odds: Week 2 Power Rankings

Following the first weekend of the 2022 NFL season, which players elevated their MVP stock, and which players saw their outlook decline? Matt MacKay is here with updated power rankings for the league's future Most Valuable Player.

2022 NFL MVP Odds: Week 2 Power Rankings

It's easy to overreact after one week of watching the NFL. Historically, Week 1 is infamous for flukey occurrences compared to the rest of the season. Yet it's hard to imagine that Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is a fraudulent MVP candidate. He dissected the Los Angeles Rams offense with precision, finishing with three passing touchdowns and utilizing his mobility and strength to power through defenders as a ball carrier.

The top ten players with the highest implied chance to win NFL MVP are all quarterbacks. Justin Jefferson is an incredible talent and he displayed it during a nine reception, 184-yard, two-touchdown outing against a good Green Bay defense. Fair or unfair, he will need to keep this ridiculous pace up if he hopes to make a run at becoming a leading MVP candidate.

NFL handicapper Matt MacKay returns to rank his top ten MVP candidates and will explain why each player deserves to be tailed or faded at their current odds.

1. JOSH ALLEN (QB - BUF) +425 (Bet $100 to win $425)

The Buffalo Bills have developed their former 2018 seventh overall draft pick into more than a franchise quarterback. Josh Allen is a superstar. Whether it's with his legs or his arm, Allen has shown the ability to be a playmaker in every area of the field. He led all players during the offseason as the MVP betting favorite at +650 but those odds have since been reduced to +425. Allen accounted for four touchdowns and over 350 total yards of offense in a 31-10 blowout win over the defending Super Bowl champion, Los Angeles Rams. Hop on the +425 while you can before Allen's MVP value gets drastically reduced by the end of the regular season.

2. PATRICK MAHOMES (QB - KC) +500 (Bet $100 to win $500)

Patrick Mahomes wasted no time showing us that he's still a top-three quarterback in the NFL. The 27-year-old quarterback and former 2018 MVP and Super Bowl LIV MVP knows what it takes to reach the mountain top of the league. Mahomes is battle tested and has a new arsenal of weapons to build chemistry with throughout the 2022 season. He found Travis Kelce eight times for 121 yards and a touchdown in a 44-21 lopsided win over the Arizona Cardinals. In Week 2, he struggled against a vastly improved Los Angeles Chargers defense but still finished with three passing touchdowns in a narrow 27-24 win. Mahomes jumped from +900 to +500 and will continue to remain atop the MVP conversation.

3. JUSTIN HERBERT (QB - LAC) +700 (Bet $100 to win $700)

While he didn't come out with the win, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is one of the league's most potent young franchise quarterbacks. He already has six passing touchdowns through two difficult AFC West matchups. Fractured rib cartilage couldn't even slow Herbert down late in his loss against the Chiefs, as he stayed in the game to mount a final touchdown drive. He ended it with a dart of a throw to wideout Joshua Palmer in the back of the end zone. Herbert's 6-6, 237-pound frame allows him to survey the field and step into his throws with confidence. Jacksonville and Houston are juicy matchups for Herbert to continue building his case for MVP.

4. JALEN HURTS (QB - PHI) +1800 (Bet $100 to win $1800)

The addition of A.J. Brown to Philadelphia's offense was an obvious success against the Detroit Lions in Week 1. No one benefitted more from Brown's presence than Eagles' third-year quarterback Jalen Hurts. He didn't throw any touchdown passes against a gritty Lions secondary but Hurts did finish with 243 passing yards. Most of it went to Brown, who finished with ten receptions for 155 yards on 13 targets. Hurts also has a talented running back room to allow him to utilize his rushing talent, evading defenders with ease. Hurts racked up 92 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries due to his game-breaking speed and elite vision as a ball carrier. I expect him to continue carrying this Eagles offense and improving as a passer with Dallas Goedert and Devonta Smith forming a dynamic receiving corps.

5. LAMAR JACKSON (QB - BAL) +1200 (Bet $100 to win $1200)

Lamar Jackson's decision to turn down a lucrative contract extension this offseason has left him with only one choice. Ball out and reclaim the MVP title to earn the contract he desires from the Ravens. He looked every bit the part of an MVP candidate against the Jets, tossing three touchdown passes and connecting on a beautifully thrown 55-yard touchdown pass to second-year wideout Rashod Bateman. Jackson's explosiveness and ability to move laterally in tight space allows him to bypass defenders and coverage, extending plays and delivering homerun finishes. The return of running back J.K. Dobbins could be the X-factor in Jackson mounting another terrific season and reclaiming MVP for the second time in four years. Jackson jumped significantly to +1200 and he's still a fantastic value to bet on this early in the season.

6. AARON RODGERS (QB - GB) +1600 (Bet $100 to win $1600)

Buy the dip on Aaron Rodgers. Yes, he's no longer playing with All-Pro wideout Davante Adams and the Packers were blown out embarrassingly by the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1. We've seen this outcome before. Rodgers laid an egg against the New Orleans Saints during the first game of the 2021 season, where he would go on to become the league MVP for the second consecutive year. He threw a rare interception and another perfect ball down the sideline to rookie wideout Christian Watson that wound up being dropped. The Packers' offense will start clicking in Week 2 against a Chicago Bears team that Rodgers historically dominates. Place a bet on Rodgers at +1600 before it goes back up after a Sunday Night Football blowout at Lambeau Field.

7. JOE BURROW (QB - CIN) +2000 (Bet $100 to win $2000)

Cincinnati played one of the most incredibly volatile games in recent memory during their Week 1 overtime loss to Pittsburgh. Joe Burrow led the Bengals to an unexpected win in the AFC Championship and nearly mounted a comeback against the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LVI. No one expected a five-turnover performance from Burrow in front of his home fans during the season opener against a division rival. Yet it happened. Reports of the third-year quarterback staring into his locker and brooding in silence indicate that he's locked in and ready to show out against Dallas in Week 2. Buy the dip on Burrow at +2000, which is great value considering the talent surrounding him on Cincinnati's roster.

8. TOM BRADY (QB - TB) +1200 (Bet $100 to win $1200)

Tampa Bay didn't ask Tom Brady to do too much to begin his 23rd NFL season. He faced a talented Dallas Cowboys defense but still came out with a 19-3 win on the road, throwing a touchdown that Mike Evans hauled in with one hand. Brady may be the oldest starting quarterback in the league by several years, but he attempted 719 passes in 2021, setting a career-high. The Bucs' offense is currently dealing with a host of injuries but Brady has the experience, talent, and opportunity to elevate his stock for an opportunity to win his fourth MVP.

9. MATTHEW STAFFORD (QB - LAR) +3000 (Bet $100 to win $3000)

No quarterback saw their odds slide further down than Matthew Stafford in Week 1. The reigning Super Bowl champion rehabbed his elbow during the offseason, leading to speculation surrounding the current health and functionality of his throwing mechanics. Stafford was constantly under duress from a talented Buffalo defense, so it wasn't all his fault. He threw three interceptions and had numerous balls batted at the line of scrimmage. Stafford is arguably the toughest quarterback in the league but his offensive line is worse, surrendering seven sacks during their 31-10 loss to Buffalo. He has a bounce-back opportunity against a weak Atlanta Falcons secondary in Week 2, so take advantage of his increased value at +3000. The Rams are built to contend right now and Stafford has the talent to still contend for his first MVP title.

10. RUSSELL WILSON (QB - DEN) +2000 (Bet $100 to win $2000)

Russell Wilson's debut for the Denver Broncos was a spectacular flop. The former Super Bowl champion and nine-time Pro-Bowler entered a Week 1 matchup against his former team, the Seattle Seahawks, as a heavy betting favorite. He completed 29 of 42 passes for 340 yards and a touchdown but it wasn't nearly enough to warrant MVP consideration. Wilson is no longer the active runner that he displayed during the height of his career with the Seahawks, meaning he has to get it done solely with his arm talent. Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton could be considered downgrades from Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf, while the offensive line woes remain an issue. Wilson's MVP odds ballooned from +1400 to +2000 after a pedestrian showing, however, he did mitigate mistakes and played turnover-free football. Wilson will need to dominate the loaded AFC West if he wants to remain a top-ten MVP candidate.
