The Panthers have moved on from Matt Rhule after 38 disappointing games in charge this morning. Matt Rhule is the first NFL coach to be fired in 2022. So, now all eyes are on who will be tasked with turning around a franchise that has just one winning season since 2016. Sportsbooks expect owner David Tepper to reel in a big fish in future Hall of Famer Sean Payton. But who else is potentially in the mix? Read on to find out.
PANTHERS NEXT HEAD COACH ODDS
Payton is given +350 odds, or an implied 22.2% chance to be the next Carolina Panthers head coach. He’s one of just four coaches given at least a 10% chance to land the permanent job. Cowboys Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn is given +450 odds, or an implied 18.2% chance to land the head coach job. Eagles Offensive Coordinator Shane Steichen is given +500 odds, or an implied 16.7% chance. Cowboys Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore is given +650 odds, or an implied 13.3% chance.
Interim head coach Steve Wilks is given +1000 odds, or an implied 9.1% chance to retain the job. That has him currently listed as the fifth most likely coach to land the permanent job.
Could the Panthers turn back to the college level again? Sportsbooks aren’t ruling it out, as four college head coaches are on the market. Coastal Carolina head coach Jamey Chadwell leads the way at +1600, an implied 5.9% chance. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney is given +1800 odds, or an implied 5.3% chance. Cincinnati head coach Luke Fickell and Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell are both given +2000, or an implied 4.8% chance.
OddsChecker spokesman Kyle Newman states “Sportsbooks believe this is going to go one of two ways. Either the Panthers will hire an experienced head coach from the NFL or NCAAF, or they’re going to hire a young innovative offensive mind. Of the 15 guys on the market, 10 have previous head coaching experience. Of the remaining five, three are offensive coordinators in charge of elite offenses. Only two, Jonathan Gannon and DeMeco Ryans are defensive coordinators without any previous head coaching experience.”
