Derek Carr to Be Raiders QB in 2023: Sportsbooks Still Believe That Derek Carr Is the Raiders QB of the Future
After a disappointing start to the NFL season, many have questioned what the Las Vegas Raiders future will look like. Specifically, whether or not they’d look to move on from starting quarterback Derek Carr. Well, sportsbooks aren’t ready to throw the towel in just yet.

Carr is given -130 odds, or an implied 56.5% chance to remain the team’s starting QB come Week 1 of the 2023 season. However, the books also give -110 odds, or an implied 52.4% chance, that Carr won’t be the starter. So, while the odds are in Carr’s favor, it’s certainly a toss-up.

One of the reasons that Carr is favored is because of the lack of top-end quarterback options on the draft market. As things stand, CJ Stroud is the favorite to go first overall at +190, then Bryce Young at +200. Suppose the Raiders win on Sunday though they’d be slated to pick 3rd, potentially worse, depending on the strength of the schedule. If they land third and miss out on Young and Stroud as a result, it’s hard to see another option other than sticking with Carr.
Derek Carr is not the cause of the Raiders struggles this season. He’s on pace to throw for over 4,000 yards, 25 TDs, and he’s 10th in the NFL in QBR. The Raiders could likely get a very strong package of draft picks if they decided to trade him. Perhaps that’s why they do it though. If they have a chance at Stroud or Young, who sportsbooks agree are the two best players in this class, you could get more picks while pairing that with a strong package of picks. On the other hand, the Raiders were expected to be a playoff team in pre-season this year. Perhaps they view themselves in that light and decide a young QB would set them back. It’s a difficult choice to make, which is why sportsbooks have it as nearly a toss-up.
