The NFL MVP race has already tightened up after just one week of action. Whether it's the devastating season-ending Achilles injury sustained by Aaron Rodgers or four turnovers from Josh Allen, oddsmakers have adjusted lines to make the MVP race very intriguing at the top.
Patrick Mahomes didn't defend home turf against the Lions on banner night, playing without star tight end Travis Kelce, while Tua Tagovailoa surgically picked apart the Chargers secondary to wind up with 466 passing yards and three touchdowns in a back-and-forth road win over the Chargers. During the same game, Justin Herbert was not nearly able to keep up through the air, completing 23-of-33 attempts for 228 yards and a touchdown while rushing for a second touchdown. His odds didn't change at all from +900 at FanDuel Sportsbook.
Trevor Lawrence went into Indianapolis and played a quality game, utilizing new weapon Calvin Ridley heavily within an upgraded Jaguars wide receiving corps. Joe Burrow looked completely off, facing pressure on nearly every snap, but his odds only crept down a bit, keeping him firmly in the MVP odds race. Jalen Hurts had to sweat out a second-half comeback from New England on the road, but he managed to play well enough, committing one fumble while recording a passing touchdown and 37 rushing yards.

Justin Herbert managed to play a bit better than Burrow, but he still didn't do enough to get the Chargers a win over the red-hot Dolphins offense. Tagovailoa outplayed Herbert, doubling his passing yards and tripling his touchdowns. OC Kellen Moore's arrival created a lot of buzz around the Chargers offense, but Herbert is running out of excuses. Conveniently, he gets the Titans secondary on the road in Week 2.

Trevor Lawrence is off to a great start in year two under head coach Doug Pederson, especially with the addition of wide receiver Calvin Ridley. The Jaguars exceeded expectations in 2022 and recorded a miraculous comeback in the AFC Wild Card game over the Chargers while competing with the Chiefs for stretches as well. Lawrence profiles as the generational talent he's been touted as, and he'll get another crack at a Chiefs defense that will be ready to salvage a win.

Philadelphia won an ugly game, but Jalen Hurts controlled the game nicely, facing a stout New England defense that wreaked havoc at the line of scrimmage. Expect much bigger games from Hurts, who was atop the MVP race late last year until a minor injury sidelined him. He'll face a juicy matchup at home in primetime against the Vikings secondary in Week 2.
