NFL Season Betting Recap: Best Teams Against the Spread, Totals, and More

The NFL season is in the books for the majority of the league, as we turn the page to the playoffs with 14 teams remaining. For the fans of the eliminated teams, it's time to look back and see how your squad did and if there was any betting success for them against the spread and on the totals.

Let's analyze who the big winners and losers were to bet on in the 2024 regular season. Some of the names on here might surprise you, while others like the Tennessee Titans having a record-worst ATS streak is completely expected.

NFL Season Betting Recap: Best and Worst Teams Against the Spread

The Detroit Lions led the pack against the spread this year, going 12-5 ATS when all was said and done. They wrapped it up with a three-touchdown stomping of the Minnesota Vikings in a winner-takes-all NFC North title game this weekend, and earned a first round bye for their troubles.

There were two other teams tied with the Lions for best spread record, which would be the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers. Both AFC West teams far outperformed expectations, and were rewarded with wild card spots in the playoffs this upcoming weekend.

Meanwhile, the Tennessee Titans finished last in the NFL, turning in a record-worst 2-15 against the spread record. They were also the worst moneyline team as well, winning just three games and earning the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Only three teams in the Super Bowl era finished 3-13 against the spread, and the Titans raised that one better by only covering twice all year.

NFL Season Betting Recap: Best and Worst Totals Teams

In the totals side of things, the two leaders are polar opposites. The Carolina Panthers and the Baltimore Ravens both went 13-4 to the over in the 2024 regular season, but obviously ended up in very different situations. The Ravens had the second-best scoring offense in the NFL outside of only the Detroit Lions, so they were able to fly over the total almost by themselves sometimes. Carolina was a different story, going over either from poor defense, or the late-season resurgence of Bryce Young. Often, it was both at play, as they put up and gave up more points than Vegas expected out of them. However, they find themselves in the race for a top draft pick, not the playoffs.

The worst teams for the overs were the New York Giants and Houston Texans at 6-11 overall. Another similar story here, the Texans had a great defense that shut a lot of teams down, and a weaker schedule certainly helped in the AFC South. Back east, the Giants had one of the most abysmal offenses to ever take an NFL field, with four different starting quarterbacks laying an egg week after week. The defense was mediocre at times, but they just couldn't score, leading to a lot of unders on the year.
