New Orleans Saints Starting QB Odds: Spencer Rattler Leaps Over Tyler Shough Ahead of First Preseason Game

The New Orleans Saints will kick off their preseason campaign on Sunday afternoon against the Los Angeles Chargers on NFL Network. But who will be under center for Kellen Moore's team in the first game of his head coaching career?

All signs are pointing to Spencer Rattler overtaking the expected Tyler Shough after a major odds shift on Tuesday afternoon. It hasn't been officially confirmed by the team, but Rattler was reportedly the practice starter for two days in a row, causing his odds to change from +105 to -170 today.

Is Kellen Moore just testing him out for multiple days, or is this his way of saying he's made his decision on the starter? At the very least, Rattler is earning glowing reviews, and the Saints starting QB odds now reflect it. Let's break down the contenders for the New Orleans job.

Spencer Rattler -170 Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds

Spencer Rattler started a decent amount of games for the Saints last year after Derek Carr got injured, and had a few moments where you said "he could be the guy". He started seven games and threw for 1300 yards with a banged up crew and weak roster.

Early reports out of preseason note that Rattler's been accurate in his time, and has been taking the majority of the starting reps. Under Kellen Moore's direction, a proven offensive mind in the league, he may have a fighting shot.

This line has flown to -170 at Bet365 and -195 on FanDuel Sportsbook over the course of Tuesday afternoon, whereas it was just +105 in the morning. The multiple days of first team reps have started to convince bettors that Rattler may be the leader in New Orleans, although it's all speculation until the first snaps are seen this weekend.

He'll go against the second-ranked Chargers defense, and though they sat many players in their hall of fame game last week, they may put a few starters out there to get reps this time around.

Tyler Shough +140 Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds

Tyler Shough was a surprise pick for the Saints. They grabbed him at 40th overall in the second round. It wasn't a surprise for them to draft a QB, everyone knew they needed one. Especially when Derek Carr retired late in the offseason.

The real surprise was that they took Shough, who had a decent but not second-round level college career. He played six years of college football for three schools, and never really shined until this last year at Louisville. Shough flew up draft boards in the spring, and ended up getting taken before Shedeur Sanders and others. But was it the right decision?

The expectation going into camp was that he would be the starter, but he has been less than inspiring so far. Many have doubted his experience level at 25 years old and only one really successful season under his belt. Shough has fallen in the odds from -250 to now +140 over at Bet365, and even worse at FanDuel (+162). He'll have a chance to close the gap in preseason play, but for now it may be Rattler's job to lose out there.

Jake Haener +2500 Click here to see which sportsbook has the best odds

This one is wildly unlikely, and would probably require an injury to both starters or an outstanding preseason showing. Haener is in his second year out of Fresno State, and played in a few games last season. He completed just 18 of 39 passes for 226 yards, and was sacked six times. He added one touchdown and one interception, and had a QBR of 14.4. Haener is not really in this competition right now, but should be on the roster as the third string.
